This Coffee Shop or Cha Chaan Teng that offers authentic HK and Honolulu styled Food, has been around for years and well-known among travellers as similar named and themed cafe may be operating in their country. They are particularly famous for their breakfast dishes, especially their egg tarts and milk tea, but not too sure about now since many other cafe has been competing for that status over the years.
We did not ordered their Egg Tarts during our recently trip as we had enough from other cafes and bakeries. However we did ordered their Milk Tea that was creamy, had a well-balanced sweetness that wasn’t overpowering, a noticeable tea flavour but abit bitter for my liking.
We had their Scrambled Egg that was served plain but it was moist, creamy, fluffy, soft and custardy, with flavour from butter. It was delicious.
Polo Bun had a crispy crust with soft and elastic internal, packed with flavours from pineapple and sweeten milk. It was actually one of the better polo bun that i had.
We also ordered their Fried Yellow Noodle with Curry Beef Brisket. The Yellow Noodle were deep fried to crispy texture, Curry was thick with mild spiciness and sweetness that complimented well enough with chunky pieces of juicy and tender beef briskets as well as potatos. Its rather enjoyable but Dish could have been better if more curry was given, especially to drench and soften the firm textured noodles as not everyone appreciates the mixed texture of the noodle with every bite.
Another carbo dish that we ordered was their Frice Rice In Yangzhou Style which was quite average, but they did executed it well enough as rice were fluffy, coated quite evenly with eggs and balanced flavours from ingredients like diced pork, shrimps and small cuts of various vegetables.
Their service staffs were quite friendly and efficient, but not attentive and rather rough in serving. Cafe had an nostalgic vibe from its decorations, uniform of service staffs and even cutleries, so its better to clean those aged cutleries...
Read moreTried the polo bun and curry rice because this place is one of the highly recommended cha chaan teng. Below is my review:
Taste: for the polo bun, i feel is just average. Abit overrated. If i am not wrong they uses margarine instead of butter. I would give it more point if they use non salted butter. The taste will be better. For the curry rice, the curry gravy is rich and tasty.
Price: i spend around 142 hkd per person. This is the cheapest meal i had since my visit to HK. I wont say it is cheap because if u convert to sgd, is around 15 SGD per pax. But is more affordable than many other eateries.
Service: average service. U dont expect top service in such eateries. For them, i find the service delivered is already more than enough for the price they charge. No hidden service charge. Some places charge additional 10%. So ask yourself if u willing to pay for that just to get marginal increase in service level for the rest of the hour dinning?
Overall: i would recommend for those who are lazy to walk there, can ask for delivery with additional charge which is priced reasonably. Check out the image for the delivery charge and...
Read moreHonolulu Coffee Shop is an old-school cha chaan teng (Hong Kong style cafe) with a few branches around this branch on Hennessy Road in Wan Chai. Opening hours are 6.30am to 11pm daily.
Here you find a local cafe, popularised in the mid 20th century, offering up traditional Cantonese style breakfasts, bakery items and other affordable meals.
It is a place to try local style milk tea (lai cha), tarts (daan ta) and pineapple buns (polo boa) all of which taste as you'd expect. You can order all of the above for HK$49 per person (see menu picture for prices).
Seating is better spaced out at this Honolulu Cafe than what you often find at cha chaan tengs around the city. Service is fast and they have English menus to help with making orders. There is an outdoor order counter as well if you prefer a take-away order to eating inside.
In the end, Honolulu is one of the famous cha chaan teng franchises in the city and neat place to try when...
