Starburst’s food review on JUNON locations Last month, I went to the famous restaurant JUNON to celebrate anniversaries with my parents at around 8:00p.m. It is located on 2/F, Wu Chung House, 213 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai ,which is convenient for me to take the MTR.
decorations When I first went there, I was amazed by the decorations and collections. on the left hand side, there were shelves displaying old collections of wine, which is so cool. On the right hand side, I saw a huge diamond light, it is so aesthetic. The toilet, which I was amazed the most, has a flower pattern wallpaper, with some pretty mirrors on it. Also there were some candles on the desk. Overall, it's old school but aesthetic.
the dishes First, we had a starter, which I ordered with French baked snails with escargot. I was pretty surprised to see these rare, hard-to-make dishes. The baked snails match perfectly with the escargot and olive oils. The surface of the snails were even crispy, which I burst out of enjoyment. Then I had a big piece of steak, which I ordered medium-well. To my surprise, the steak ratio of the oil and meat blends perfectly well. The waitress also offered me around 5 different varieties of mustard, as I am not a pro at that, so I had each of them once. My favorite one was the british mustard, it was a bit spicy, but smooth, which improved the quality of the greasy steak. For dessert, it is delicious! I ordered a pear pie. The pie was so crunchy. The custard’s vanilla and cream blend perfectly together. while I put it in my mouth, the sour pear, sweet custard and the crunchy pie was basically like going to heaven. the services The service was fantastics. The waitress introduced every type of food on the menu to us, and answered all our questions patiently. All the waitresses and waiters there were very nice and welcomed us to ask them questions. They suggested a lot of ideas to us, which were all good. Also, when I was choosing the mustard, I could not choose which one to have, and they kindly let me try all of them. They also noticed when our water was mostly drunk, they would immediately refill it for us.
recommendations It was a very enjoyable experience to dine there. It really made my day. My parents and I were full and happy at the end. overall it's perfect, but make sure to try the snail! I would definitely recommend everyone...
Read moreOwned by a famous Canto-pop singer Hins Cheung, Junon is a revitalized French restaurant that preserves antiques and incubates local performers through daily singing and drama performance. This restaurant has been on my partner’s and my bucket list, and we decided to check it out on a date night.
Menu is printed daily in a newspaper style. The front side is the menu, and the back side is the news that happened on the same day some 30 to 40 years ago. It was really entertaining to read those news when we were waiting for the dinner to be served.
We ordered two starters and a main to share. The first starter was these Baked Escargots in French Butter and Garlic, as my partner wanted to have something French in such a restaurant. I don’t normally opt for this kind of food, but it was a great experience as the butter and garlic made the slimy snails quite enjoyable to eat.
Second starter was this Smoked Salmon Tartare with Potato Churros. The salmon tartare was a bit ordinary yet delicious. What’s special about this dish is the potato churros which we were intrigued. It tasted like savory churros for real!
Main was a Poached Cod Fish Filet, Potatoes, Ikura, Herbs, Nage Émulsion and Olive Oil with Fries. The fresh cod fish filet with roes was lovely! Potatoes underneath was a bit raw though. Fries was good, and the truffle mayo dip topped up its taste.
Throughout the night, we were about to enjoy this witty singing performance in the bistro area. It was engaging as the performers kept interacting with the audiences. At one point they even invited some to sing with them! On the other hand, we were also able to listen to the songs sung in the fine dining area through the PA system. The performance did create a nice dining atmosphere.
We took some time to adore the decoration after our meal. I was surprised that the jewelries, tea cups and plates in one of the display cupboard are for sale!
On the whole, we feel like Junon is a great place to celebrate anniversary, birthdays or family events. It would...
Read moreSeems like THE place to go for birthdays, as we went for a relative's birthday, and the singer read out a long list of other tables having birthday celebrations that night. I do see why it's popular for celebrating an event. The restaurant is very quaint with it's romantic style of decor, and in a city lacking in live performances this place with its own stage and a slew of by-gone-era performances makes it a "different " experience for a Hong Kong person. The amateurish singers, choice of songs (stick with Chinese songs if you can't pronounce the English lyrics) can make for a few laughs in the beginning... but wears thin by the third performance. We all agreed that the food was okay, but nothing special. They did make a good dry martini, which I sorely needed to help me get through the night. One of my pet peeves is when a restaurant won't make a simple change to an order - in my case I wanted to change the mash potatoes with fries to go with my steak. They insisted that I must have the mash (which came in a separate bowl anyway) and order an additional fries, no other way! Well, I did do that. Their fries were ok... but the mash was terrible. Other huge problem.... we placed our order at 7:45. Our mains were finally served to us, after our much complaining, at 9:35! Understand, it wasn't even a full house. Never going there again... and will warn my friends...
