The Restaurant Proto was a disappointment, or at least what came out of the kitchen was. The setting is beautiful and I usually have a good sense of a restaurant that only has the looks or the history but not the quality when it comes to what should be at the center: the food. This time the reality check was harder as it came completely unexpected: the reputation was fine, ratings were too, the reservation experience was very friendly, the menu looked good and the design, decor, plates and everything except the food lived up to the expectations.
You can often tell the quality of a kitchen when they are able to serve a simple salad. Well, this chef seems only to be interested in the quality of the fish and seafood but not at all in anything accompanying it.
The sea bass (catch of the day) itself was good, but still average. The mashed cauliflower accompanying the fish was almost tasteless (one of us thought it was mashed potatoes - that's how far away it was from having the taste of cauliflower). The steamed spinach that was served with the fish was average. The salad was prepared with no love and came with supermarket-tasteless cherry tomatoes cut in half. The vegetarian menu main course was a way too large portion of industrial, definitely not homemade pasta with onions and peppers and some greens - without any inspiration that you could expect in a restaurant in 2017. My son's pasta again wasn't homemade and came with a Grana Padano cheese in a plastic grater (I didn't even know such a thing exists). The fishermen soup showed know signs why you could only order it for two (it was not freshly prepared for us but definitely came from a large pot serving more - or just one). The "fruit carpaccio" was basically thick slices of an apple that wasn't selected by someone with a love for taste, some bits of a tasteless melon, a sliced kiwi, slices of a peeled orange (one can't call it filleted!). Not a way to prepare and serve fruits one would expect from Adriatic cuisine. My average chocolate fondant (convenience food?) was accompanied by a scoop of industrial vanilla ice cream.
Dubrovnik is a gem for good restaurants - there are so many of them. Absolutely no use to go into this disappointing one which was the most expensive one we've been to the whole week we spent here.
To sum up my overall impression: it's as if the chef that built up the reputation of this place isn't cooking any longer and the current managers thought the restaurant can be run without a decent chef. Let's hope they are able to realize this and make a...
Read moreAs a solo female traveler, I booked a table on the 1st floor terrace 2 months in advance. When I arrived, I was seated in a corner behind the bar, inside on the 1st floor. When I asked to be seated at a table on the terrace that was free, I was told that that specific table had been reserved. This was suspect to me as the reservation system does not let you pick a specific table. I asked again to sit at the empty table and walked over to it and sat down. Another couple (who I later learned did not have a reservation) was being led to the table and was upset that they did not get the table that the hostess told them was available. The man in the couple sat down at my table and took my place setting, menu, and light, and proceeded to berate me for taking "his table." The restaurant patrons sat in confusion and looked at me with sympathy. After a very long few minutes, two waiters came over and asked the man to move. This was quite possibly the most humiliating and horrifying situation I have ever experienced. While the waitstaff was apologetic, they did not offer me anything for my trouble and even tried to overcharge me for bread, which I did not order. The other patrons, especially the women, were kind and supportive. A group of women even sent me a glass of champagne. On my way out, I spoke to the hostess, who told me the couple did not have a reservation and offered a litany of excuses. Hopefully, the restaurant will discontinue its practice of hiding solo female customers in the corner and allowing patrons to verbally harass...
Read moreWas recommended to this place by a friend of mine. At first the atmosphere felt lovely and the drinks seemed pleasant but very slowly things went down hill.
Our waiter for one was as thick as a brush. He forgot to mention the meal we ordered (that he himself recommended) had bone, head and tail. I chose not to have this and instead went for the monk fish as I was informed it did not have head, bone or tail. Our waiter advised against it but accepted my decision.
When my family massive fish had arrived it had been a 20 minute wait and we were all taken aback by the head and tail of this meal. I was glad to be getting the monk fish as I am scream-ish when it comes to full on dead fish. Only for the waiter to forget my meal all together, leaving me to tuck into something that I found uncomfortable.
He then came out with my monk fish only to call it a lamb chop. Lamp chops are red meat and this was a pale white, it was a fish. Then my brother who was sitting next to me began to choke on a fish bone, he was coughing for a good 3 minutes and our waiter wasn’t even concerned in fact none of the staff battered an eyelid when my brother was struggling to breathe.
He was fine in the end but still you’d expect a discount for forgetting my food and nearly killing my brother. But nope, the waiter charged us a whopping €464 and when asked about discount he just said “No, no all is fine” , he then asked for a tip. Seriously a tip after all that!!!!!!
Unless you’re looking for a rubbish meal and poor service, never...
