Authentic Indian Food

For three of us Indian families visiting Cyprus from UK it was a choice between the more established ones nearby and the very new but promising Delhi Gate. We decided to go for Delhi Gate based on the fact that the chef is from Delhi.

Turns out it was a splendid decision as chef Bharat gave us no reason to complain. Starting from the poppadums to Masala Chai, we got what North Indians expect out of their food. Butter Naans, Onion Kulchas and Paranthas were fresh and soft from the oven. Butter Chicken, Daal Makahani were right on spot as was Veg Noodles - very much as you find in apna Dilli. We requested for Paneer Makhani a-la Shahi paneer which wasnt on the Menu but the good chef obliged. Laal Maans Lamb wasn’t quite the real Rajasthani version but then I don’t see many European pallets being pleased with the very spicy original.

One of my friends had a gentle word about the house wine and the staff were quick to offer him alternatives - no charge. Decor wise too, Delhi Gate succeeds in making you feel right in the centre of Delhi.

On the face of it a very pleasant looking restaurant. Very busy but I was accommodated right away and placed my order.i enjoyed my starter, while waiting for main course the waiter went onto balcony to smoke. When he finished and came back in he immediately went to a table to clear plates. I watched him enter the kitchen and within seconds he came to my table with my plate. I could smell the smoke from his clothing . I asked him if he had washed his hands after smoking and he freely admitted he hadn't. As a non smoker I found this disgusting. I could also smell smoke from the plate he had just laid in front of me. I asked him if he was going to wash his hands before delivering food to me his response was " I smoke through my mouth not my hands". When you want to eat something good in cities you don't know and when you go like that, simply, without expectations or guided by intuition and discover something "wow" you are satisfied and happy. I am happy to have discovered the Delhi Gate restaurant right next to the Dyonisos Hotel in Paphos, where we are staying, and I am all the happier to be able to share my wonderful experience with people. I love Indian food, but this restaurant has exceeded all expectations. It's extraordinary! Congratulations from the heart to the chef, to the owner and to Adrian, the Romanian guy who served us impeccably! Everything is superlative. A huge variety of dishes.
