Mai restaurace — Restaurant in okres České Budějovice

After a long day of travel from Dresden with two buses, a walk to the station in Dresden and a walk to the apartment in Ceske Budejovice with luggage we were tired and hungry. It was after 20:00 and multiple restaurants were closed. One barmaid ignored us as we entered and essentially told us to go away even though they advertised closing at 22:00. We decided to take a chance and make the longer walk to the Mai restaurant. Upon entering we hesitantly asked if they were still serving dinner and we were excitedly welcomed and escorted to a table. We were served by the owner who graciously spoke English although difficult for her since we spoke no Czech. She was super helpful in making our selection and we enjoyed her joyful assistance. We started with a different soup for each of us and both were hot and delicious. Our two main courses were different stir fried dishes and were also delicious. They were clearly made from scratch and were spiced according to our individual requests since I like some heat and my wife does not. We stumbled into this place after seeing so many positive reviews, and the food was even better than our expectations. We are visiting from Vancouver (Canada), where we have our share of amazing Asian food, and this restaurant is SO GOOD. I couldn’t believe how authentic the dishes tasted, including all of my favourite Asian herbs in the dishes!! I think the spring rolls (Vietnamese style) may be the best spring roll I have ever tasted - it is so full of delicious ingredients and fried perfectly. The pho bo broth also has the deep star anise flavour, which is so classic!! The pork and chicken remained juicy. The portion sizes are generous & I was incredibly grateful to have dishes FULL of fresh vegetables. The business seems family owned and they were all incredibly friendly, kind, and hard-working. This restaurant is a hidden gem and we wish we could come back!! We highly recommend...

We were curious when we passed by this restaurant and saw many positive reviews, so we dropped in, and the food were even better than we expected. Both Bun Cha and Bun Tom Nam Bo we had were very tasty, not only because of the tastefully seasoned and cooked meat and shrimp, but also by the variety of vegetables and herbs on them, and the generous portions.
