Morgenstedet in Danish means "Morning Place". Since it's opening at least 4 decades ago, it has been a collectively driven vegetarian eatery in Christiania, and has managed to maintain a quite high level of quality throughout the years, despite shifting crew and cooks. And that's an accomplishment not many food places can muster. The indoor seating area is rather limited, but well organized, so there can be quite a few people inside - which makes it a cozy humming place when filled up. Outdoor seating is more ample, but only enjoyable in good weather. Typically, you will have a choice of 3 warm dishes, for example a soup, a cooked meal, and a baked one. Plus an ample variety of salads to your liking. Personally, I prefer that modus operandi with limited choices but focus on quality. Rather 3 things done well than 20 so-so dishes. There is no table service, you order and pick up at the counter and then get seated. Prices at the time of this writing (08/19): Soup was DKK 60, the other two dishes DKK 90 and 110. Bottom line: The MANY times I have visited, I've never been disappointed with the food here. I'm not a vegetarian, yet the delicious preparation both optically and taste-wise is simply convincing. On another positive note: The pleasant absence of "background music"....
Read moreHow can a tiny coop earn my five stars in a city studded with great eats? Uh-uh! Summer of '69 meets danish hyggeligt. So authentic, so unpretentious... and so cheap :) This peaceful oasis lies right at the heart of free town Christiania (some would argue that heart would be Pusher's Street, to each it's own). Serving lunch and dinner with a rotating vegetarian menu, always fresh, always wholesome + they offer hands down the best Chai Latte in the western world.
Morgenstedet has a split personality. In wintertime you enter a warm, cozy, almost buccolic haven, usually playing Dylan's tunes and bursting with patrons, making it difficult to find a place to seat. But Morgenstedet really blooms in spring, where you can seat outside (of course you can seat outside in winter too, providing you are feeling vikingy!) share your table with beautiful people, sip your chai and contemplate life from the perspective of a flower child.
Ah, life is good!
Just a small side note: This place doesn't serve alcohol but nobody minds if you bring your own. Christiania's beer just down the street. Closed on Mondays and...
Read moreThis place has an absolutely wonderful atmosphere surrounding it. I’ve been there both in winter and in summer with the most resent one being in summer. As usually the food tasted delicious and there is plenty of it on your plate. You can calmly eat here and except to get a full and round belly.
The soup is light and taste good. I got a curry chickpea soup and it had a nice and light flavour of curry. Last time I got a burrito with pasta-pesto salad and some bulgur salad. They always serve the burrito and for vegans baked polenta. And some different pasta and such salads. Always hummus! It’s good.
Outside there’s a wonderful and cozy garden where you can sit and enjoy your food. It has a really nice and calming feel to it.
Beware that they only take cash, so you better stock up on that first. Otherwise you get something for your money! It’s not expensive...
