A couple weeks ago was the first time I visited Copenhagen. When people told me that Copenhagen is a great food city, I was excited. The first night we ate at Restaurant Barr, which we had very high expectations for. It was a good meal, but did not wow us at all.
Our second night we ate at Restaurant Levi, which I had seen on a couple of YouTube videos. We also had high expectations, and our expectations were exceeded. It was an excellent meal from start to finish. Our friendly and warm waiter, Julius, definitely contributed to our enjoyment of the meal. He was very attentive and gave little suggestions that were all very good.
Every thing we ate at Levi was delicious. That’s what impressed me, there wasn’t a boring bite the whole meal. Each dish was truly enjoyable.
Lardo toast + caviar - hard to go wrong with these ingredients.
Rice cake + Mazara Prawns - I had never had this type of shrimp before. It was sweet, soft, and full of flavor.
Bao Buns + Wagyu + Salsa Verde - These reminded me of the Siopao I ate as a child. The dough was so fluffy and the filling had a sweet soy asian flavor.
Monkfish Cheeks + XO Emulsion - the best fried fish I have ever eaten. Perfectly crisp on the outside, and a delicious fatty fish on the inside.
Wagyu Striploin + Arancino + Wasabi - the star of the show. Sadly, I shared this with my husband. Looking back, we should have ordered two so we didn’t have to share. A perfect arancino, nice and crispy, and not at all greasy, covered with a thin slice of delicious wagyu. I loved the creativity of this dish. It really was the best mash up of Italian+Japanese cuisine I could ever imagine.
Maccheroni + Rabbit Ragout + Crusco Pepper - very good
The special of the day was a pasta dish with truffles on top. I think the sauce was pretty simple, but it was delicious. The texture and taste of the pasta was perfect and brought me back to our trip to Italy a few years ago.
Dessert was the pistachio ice cream, which Julius promised was the best pistachio ice cream out there. And he was right. I loved how creamy it was, and the temperature was perfect. It wasn’t ice cold. When you took a bite, you could really enjoy and taste the flavor, instead of just feeling the coldness that you normally feel when eating ice cream.
I’m so glad we dined at Levi. It was truly the best meal of our trip (and we went to London and Paris!). Thanks to Julius, the rest of the staff, and the excellent chefs for an unforgettable evening.
I predict they will get at least one Michelin star in the future. They...
Read moreStarting with the good part: beautiful room, furniture, atmosphere. Having passed in the street it made me want to try the place. Stunning place.
Now for the totally underwhelming part: the food. Pretentious and poorly executed. Totally hit and miss. Overpriced. Some of the dishes are just uninteresting. Some could have been good, but are poorly executed. We ate the following:
Oysters. Small size. One with leek was good, the one with trout roe was just strange. Hard to mess up a perfectly good oyster.
We had the broccoli - mushroom starter which was uninteresting and not very tasty. Just ???
The waguy skewers were dry and chewy. The preparation could have been ok but the actual meat was not good.
We had a pasta dish with guineafowl ragu with olives. The ragu was quite good. The pasta was undercooked. Not all dente, just undercooked with a hard center. Super tiny portion at 255 dkk. Half the size of what I would have expected at that price at a top restaurant.
The other main dish we had was the Iberico pork. The meat was good quality but the char siu sauce was way, way too salty, and the dish was only edible by scraping off the sauce. I personally don't like wood ear mushrooms so I did not eat them.
For dessert we had the pistachio ice cream with olive oil and salt. It was absolutely delicious, but one small scoop of ice cream at 105 DKK is just silly.
My husband had the apricot tart. The crust was almost raw, the filling strange, very sweet and did not taste of apricot. There was a bit of chunky apricot jam and ice cream. (135dkk) He thought it was the worst serving of the evening, even poorer than the rest.
The service was just næh. Rushed and perfunctory.
In summary: pretentious, mostly poorly done food. Tiny portions. Overpriced for what you get. Beautiful room. Trying too hard but not succeeding. Have a drink at Levi and then head across the street to locale 21 for truly amazing food and a...
Read moreThe food was fine, but the service was terrible. Our waiter was unengaged and "forgot" about us multiple times. Every other waiter was polite, smiley and attentive, but our waiter didn't ask us once if we were enjoying ourselves, if the food was good or if we wanted more to drink. He barely spoke to us and spent most of his time, talking to the male host and tasting wine with said host, at the bar cart.
Worst of all was finding multiple bones in the fish. Now I understand that there are bones in fish, but the size of the pieces of fish should have made it very managable to take out the bones - and especially for that price. When we noted this to our own waiter, he said nothing. Just "oh okay"? When we noted this to the waitress who took out our plate, she said she would "tell the kitchen"? It was such an unappetizing experience, and the fact that there was no reaction or concern from the staff made it so much worse. We then waited, with empty glasses (we wanted cocktails but gave up after 30 minutes with no glance from our waiter). We decided to aks for the bill, which we then had to ask yet a third waiter for, and then we waited another 15 minutes for our own waiter to realize that we wanted to pay??
I can't believe that this is the service and food quality that is being presented for this price. I would like to give Levi another shot, because there were some stand out dishes (Pistachio gelato and the risotto), but i can safely say that it is one of the worst service experiences I have ever had...
