Nyhavn is quintessential part of Copenhagen and you haven’t really visited this city if you didn’t come to this canal. It’s a favorite among locals of all ages as well as tourist. It really is a very lovely and charming area due to the cobbled streets, old buildings and vintage sail ships. ⚓️ You clearly feel the maritime history here, and can easily imagine the drunken sailors and madams hanging out here in the past centuries. While cargo from the orient was unloaded. In the daytime a lot of families comes here also for the tour boats. But as night comes it turns into a quiet party street and in early morning a lot of drunk 🥴 people stumble about. I’ve been to many restaurants here over the years and although it’s an expensive area the quality is unfortunate not always guaranteed. In my opinion the best restaurants are “Havfruen”and “hyttefadet” 🦞 on which I have made reviews. If you are super annoyed by tourist crowded areas you should still consider avoiding Nyhavn.

History: Nyhavn is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, Denmark. Stretching from Kongens Nytorv to the Inner Harbour just south of the Royal Playhouse, it is lined by brightly coloured 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants. The canal harbours many historical wooden ships. Nyhavn seen on a detail from Rosen's Map of Copenhagen, 1674 Nyhavn was constructed by King Christian V from 1670 to 1675, dug by Danish soldiers and Swedish prisoners of war from the Dano-Swedish War 1658–1660. It is a gateway from the sea to the old inner city at Kongens Nytorv (King's Square), where ships handled cargo and fishermens' catch. It was notorious for beer, sailors, and prostitution. Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nyhavn for 18 years. The first bridge across Nyhavn opened on 1874. It was a temporary wooden footbridge. It was replaced by the current...

Nyhavn is an absolutely charming place to visit, and one of the highlights of our trip to Copenhagen. With its colorful row houses lining the canal, it truly feels like stepping into a postcard. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxing, making it a wonderful spot to simply stroll and take in the views.

The waterfront is lined with plenty of restaurants and cafés, perfect for enjoying a meal or drink while people-watching and soaking up the vibrant surroundings. On sunny days, the place comes alive with energy, and the reflections on the canal make it especially picturesque.

If you’re planning to take a canal or river cruise, be mindful of the schedules. Delays of 15–30 minutes are not uncommon, so it’s best to check the timing in advance to avoid waiting around.

Nyhavn is also very family-friendly, with open spaces for walking, calm corners for resting, and food options to suit all tastes. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or with children, it’s a place everyone can enjoy.

Overall, we had a fantastic experience here. Between the stunning views, the welcoming atmosphere, and the abundance of dining options, Nyhavn is a must-visit in Copenhagen. We’d definitely recommend adding it to...
