We searched google for restaurants in the area and this had mixed reviews but mostly the food was positive so we gave it a try. The menu was different to most other places and had an eclectic feel which we liked so I ordered the Tuna entree and asked for it rare. My (Asian) wife ordered the drunken noodles; spicy. Service was very good and we received the items in good time. My plate consisted of 2 small pieces of tuna, several steak fries and a small bowl of fried rice. You were allowed to choose the sides. I thought the portion of tuna was small for the $20 price but it was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly to my liking. The potatoes were also crunchy and tasty. The Drunken Noodles, however, were shockingly black and after a few bites, the saltiness overwhelmed as it appeared they had been served with an excessive amount of soy sauce. I finished my tuna quickly and when the server came by to check we explained that the noodles were practically inedible and maybe a bowl of rice would help. Apparently she didn’t understand and the next time she came without rice we tried to explain again. At that point her colleague came by and asked what was wrong and we explained again that the dish was overpowered with salt and soy sauce. We had actually removed what seemed like 1/2 cup soy sauce, poured it off into,a side bowl and also mopped the noodles with napkins. We both like savory but this was just ridiculous. She soon returned with a bowl of white rice and said that the chef told her the dish was not salty at all! It was then that she said we should have said something and the chef would have recooked it! We DID say something! we tried mixing it in to cut the saltiness and were able to eat a few more bites but had to leave most of it. Up until now we were able to forgive and forget but then we got the $61 bill and noticed that they charged us for the bowl of rice! This is why I write thus review. We are so disappointed because we really wanted to return and try...
Read morefunky, eclectic style and open-air windows attracted us here. Very cool carved wood bar that serves a full drink menu. Interesting menu combining island ingredients and flavors (sesame, teriyaki, gochujang) of Asian cuisines. Vegetarian options available. Yakitori, Bahn MI, Pad Thai on the menu along with salads and burgers. Though I didn’t order it, the Bloody Mary Ceviche sounded and looked quite good. Our server was very attentive during a very quiet time during our visit. Drink choices for us were the Imperial Lemonade-really just a sparkling lemonade-and a delicious Strawberry Passionfruit smoothie. The latter was one of the better versions I enjoyed in the islands.
The entrée choices for us were the Tempura Shrimp Bahn Mi with Lemon Syrup and the Baltra Salad. The salad was wonderful. Lettuce, cabbage, peppermint, onion, leeks, and cherry tomato combined with a lemongrass and orange dressing. Topped with a generous portion of wok sautéed shrimp. The flavor profile was so unique and very, very good. The Bahn Mi was also delicious. Perfect bread, a flavorful garlic mayo, and crisp pickled veggies combined with the lightly tempura fried shrimp for a highly enjoyable meal. The advertised lemon syrup didn’t add much, lacking any real flavor. Both of these dishes exceeded expectations. The dessert menu listed Carrot Cake and that’s a go to for us. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream which is not something we see regularly. The cake was unique and delicious. Served warm. Very light cake unlike many dense versions enjoyed previously. Still full of flavor. And instead of a traditional heavy, cream cheese style frosting the slice was topped with something more akin to a glaze. Nicely sweet and perfect for the lightness of the cake. Outstanding. Our experience here led us to return for a second visit when we stayed on the island for one night on our way back home. Highly...
Read moreWe visited The Rock 2 nights in a row, just for beers, not dinner.
On the first night we sat out front enjoying watching people walk by, we were served very consistently by one member is staff, he was really friendly and always there when we needed another pint.
We came back for the second night as we really enjoyed the beer the first night. As we approached the restaurant, we saw the guy who served us the night before. We were heading to sit at the same table and he automatically asked us if we wanted to more pints! He knew our order and brought it out to us very promptly, and then brought out a little tasting selection for us to try as well, for free.
This is outstanding service in my opinion. Let’s face it, this is a place that sees different customers daily, and for this man to remember us, I was blown away!
I’ve worked in pubs and I can tell you, that is a special trait.
Excellent service, really good beers!! Definitely recommend if you’re lucky enough to be in Puerto Ayora!! Give it a try! The Weiss beer especially...
