It is very rich for this place to call itself a Thai fine dining experience. Yes, the location and the interior are pretty. The plating is attractive looking and the front-of-the-house staff offers an impecable service. But what this place lacks is the authentic flavour of the Thai dishes they serve.
For Thai fine dining examples, please, look at cookbooks by David Thomson. If get a chance, visit the Long Dtai restaurant in Koh Samui, Thailand. What Nok Nok in Tallinn serves is Thai basic home cooking/ street food. And to be honest, most street kitchens in Thailand do the same dishes much better.
Yes, by Tallinn standards (very low to begin with) the ingredients are well selected and fresh. But the dishes themselves are underdeveloped and lack the traditional medicinal, the unmf effect traditional Thai cooking has.
I tend to order in new places the most basic dishes to start with. If the restaurant does these well, there is hope for a longer relationship with the place. This time I ordered Tom Yum with shrimps and rice. The concept of charging for rice separately from the soup escapes me, but the restaurant does what it does and I am not going to comment on the pricing model. Only the food.
Tom Yum broth flavour was underdeveloped. Familiar Thai umami was absent from it (and I don't mean MSG, just plain longer cooking on low heat and letting the flavours blend nicely together). For 14 euros it costs the portion was small and the ingredients more than basic. It almost felt like couple of essential Tom Yum herbs like lemongrass were absent from the stock, but not going to insist on that. It was a soup I didn't want to keep eating. Left 1/3 of it on the plate.
The sidedish rice was of the wrong variety for the duty of dipping into the soup. I was charged 1/2 portion at 2.25 eur. But then again managed only half the 1/2 portion as it wasn't tasty by flavour or texture at all.
So, all in all it felt like an overadvertised place that looks nice in the pictures and offers good service. But the main reason to come to a place like this - tasty food -...
Read moreWe were a party of 3, all with Thai descent and were obliged to try this hyped Thai restaurant situated in Old Town. Two in our party also have extensive experience in Thai dining ourselves and here follow our review of supposedly the best Thai dining in Tallinn.
The service was fine even though there are things they could improve. Knowing the menu in Thai might not be the easiest thing to learn, but that would be a thing that would improve several things, including easier communication with their kitchen staff which we overheard they had some slight communication problem with. Besides this I would consider the service great, maybe smile a bit more perhaps.
Proceeding to the food which was a rather disappointment if you are gonna ask a real thai honestly. The Som Tam (papayasalad) are supposed to be vegetarian but here we were forced to select either prawn or chicken, besides this I would also say it is sloppy prepared. The chili and garlic are supposed to be grounded which it wasn't but we understand that it might take time, however we thought the waiter would understand we wanted it very spicy when we specifically asked for very spicy. Also in the Pad Grapao, 3 very crucial ingredients were missing which were very disappointing so essentially it wasn't really grapao even though it was decently spicy.
The interior was nice and cozy even though we only sat at the entrance floor. And to summarize this, if you are Thai and are visiting this place do not have high hopes cause you will be disappointed but if you are a "Farang" with somewhat knowledge I guess you will be satisfied. All in all I would not revisit mainly due to the pricetag of the dinner and our "thai-standard" requirement which were not met. But as mentioned "farang" might...
Read moreWe came here since Tallinn has a Collaboration with this restaurant and wanted to check this place out for a bigger reservation. Unfortunately our experience was not what we expected.
Orderd the som tam which was delicious and flavourful as well as the fried fish cakes, it was crispy airy and soft on the inside. However our main courses which was the Tom yum soup and a pork garlic fried wok was not that good. The Tom yum lacked acidity (no side condiments either)and the prawns were not good The wok was just thinly sliced pork deep fried in some sauce that wasn't blended properly so some bites was so salty and we could not tate anything but bean paste almost. Which of course was a huge disappointment and we had to leave majority of the food.we orderd mango sticky rice, but the mango was unripe and the rice had dry edges even though we ate it immediately after we got it.
Since we came around 9:20 (last order is 10) the waitress really stressed that the kitchens closes in 25 minutes. Nor did they ask when they took the food away if the food was good. In addition to why the score is at it is also due to the service, we felt that our service personal was quite cold and not there for us which made us feel unwelcome. It was made extremely apparent when the pair that sat next to us was guided to their coat hangers, asked multiple times if the food was to their liking and over all was given a friendlier treatment.
Overall, it is very unfortunate that the main courses did not live up to our expectations, but the drinks and appitizers were delicious. However, it left us feeling unwelcome from the moment we stepped in and until we...
