Nothing really makes sense here. To me it seems like a wannabe fancy restaurant. Someone who doesn’t know what it takes to have an excellent restaurant tries to think of what fine dining could be. Let me explain: They have a counter like a reception for arriving guests, yet no staff there. Once they finally realise that you are waiting they tell you were to put your coats and open the wardrobes - but wont ask to take them for you. Yet they awkwardly stand next to you and wait until you put your coats in the wardrobe. Maybe I expected too much here so I lowered my expectations. But from here on even basic standards that you could expect from a restaurant in this price range weren’t met: service from the left side, the lady wasn’t served first, the knifes facing outwards, cutlery for the later dishes were brought to the table after the dishes were served, the staff didn’t inform us which dishes were out (after we wanted to order they told us that one dish was out, so we order the next one, it was also out - why don’t you tell that to the customer up front?). You see that its small things but they add up leaving a feeling of unprofessionalism. Anyway, we were seated next to another couple. The layout of the tables however meant that I was sitting closer to the guy next to me than to my girlfriend on the other side of the table. Generally, the tables are too high (or the seating options too low). So it isn’t comfortable to sit there and enjoy the food. Once again showing that whoever was in charge of it was concerned with making it look fancy rather than it being actually of high quality. Lets talk about the food. The bread and tomatoes that were served left me with mixed feelings. The black bread was good, the tomatoes (bruschetta) was great but the „crackers“ were old and not crunchy. For starters I had the tuna tartar, it was decently temperated, the tuna fresh and nice. Yet, the dish was overall rather boring and not with too many flavours. The salmon roe on top was small and didn’t really burst - so rather on the lower end of the quality scale. For main I had the fettuccine della mamma. After the rather boring starter, this was a pleasant surprise. Nice flavours, a lot of mushrooms and meat. I would even go so far to say that it was too much for a pasta dish. But this would be over critical now as the dish was great - bursting of flavours with extremely tender beef, and a creamy sauce. For dessert I had a creme brûlée which was lovely - not too sweet, great texture and fresh berries. Only the caramel layer was to thin and not properly molten.
Overall, I would not recommend going to Gianni for two reasons: first, because the service is bad. Second because there are many better restaurants in Tallinn in the same price range. The food overall is decent but sometimes lacks quality or a certain...
Read moreAs it was near to our hotel we had a coffee and some dessert in the cafe. We liked the service and we wanted to have dinner at night. But it was not a good idea. The restaurant has a nice ambience. But as this is a fine dine restaurant I want to criticize some details. We had 3 courses of meat . -Sliced beef fillet with balsamico, rucola and parmesan -Beef fillet with green pepper and cognac sauce -Grilled beef entrecote with fried onions First two were almost perfect but entrecote was a very bad experience. We don’t mind fat on an entrecôtei. We know it is a part of meat but this was the worst entrecote we saw. This one had an unacceptable amount of vein of very tough gristle. Service was not good. There was a fly in the wine. I tried to take the fly with a fork and expected the waitress to see and offer to change the wine but she only took the fork but did not offer to change the wine. We ordered 3 cups of coffee, 2 of the cups came with coffee stains. In the old town you can find restaurants with better...
Read moreCame here for a Sunday lunch with my wife and 3 kids . We ordered two glasses of wine , the tomato salad w burrata to share , two truffle pasta which was made in the Parmesan wheel and the kids had meals from the kids menu . To start they brought a very nice bread selection to the table with a lovely tomato and garlic salsa which was simple and very delicious . Kids meals were great and well priced at 9€ each . Truffle pasta was wonderful even though it could have been a little hotter (temperature) , but flavor was subtle and pasta was really well made . We shared a tiramisu and the kids had one scoop of ice cream each and we had coffee also The atmosphere is quite modern and fancy , yet relaxed still. Our waiter did a great job and we enjoyed the whole meal . Bill came to 143€ which I thought was reasonable seeing the quality and amount of...
