"Sometimes a cocktail is just a cocktail" -(not exactly) Sigmund Freud.
Sigmund Freud bar in Tallinn, Estonia is one of the most perfectly rendered "concept bars" I have ever seen. Inspired by its famous namesake, the "devil in the details" for Sigmund Freud bar is not relegated, as in many cases, to simple Freudian inspired decor--but really dives down into the entire way you experience menus, choices, and cocktails overall.
Instead of picking your cocktail based on its ingredients--you choose it based on your humor. No, not the secret stand-up comic routine you've been working on during Open Mic nights--your humor as in Ancient Greek medicine humors--phlegmatic, choleric, melancholic, and sanguine. Freud never discussed the four humors at length, but he definitely thought a lot about temperament, and the 4 humors are supposed to categorize these basic human "types." Think of it like the OG Meyers-Briggs or Enneagram.
Anyway, at Sigmund Freud, you pull up a chair and select your mood. Within each of the 4 humoral divisions are different specific cocktails describing personalities. Are you a "Hugs and Kisses"? That is, according to the menu, "charismatic and can easily charm others" (a Sanguine sub-type). Or, are you more of a "Finch," (a choleric type, described as "a good problem solver and able to find creative solutions)? Whatever you feel, there's a cocktail for your type and vibe. And, of course, if you just have to see what you're getting (or if there are dietary restrictions in your life), you can check the ingredients list at the end.
We opted to choose the cocktails we thought defined our companion best (ordering for one another), then checking what was in them after we taste-tested and tried to guess. The cocktails, while crafted expertly and involving as much complexity as many couture cocktail sites, came quickly and efficiently each time.
We hardly every waited long. And, while decor isn't at the core of this concept, a Victorian-style therapy couch and some very open-to-interpretation pictures of oysters added a playful touch to the whole place.
Totally recommend checking out this fun, clever, crafty...
Read moreA night bar with a buzzy atmosphere and good drinks ruined by rude bar staff. I was looking through the menu at my table when one of the female staff bluntly said that menus cannot be kept on the table. I understand this may be their policy but there were two issues. Firstly the rude manner in which she told this but also there were at least two other tables were menus were lying there and not taken by them. This was inconsistency at it’s finest. When I pointed this out to her she replied ‘oh those are our friends and are all ordering separately’. Clearly favouritism wins there’. When I was considering another drink and got another menu, quickly after putting it down, it was whisked away from me by an impolite male member of staff. Surely the solution would be to print more menus if that is an issue? We promptly left after that drink as we certainly weren’t going to give them...
Read moreIt is well laid out and should be a great place, however they let three guys in who shouldn't have as they were pushing each other around. Security guard was watching them but even let one pick up a bar stool to another without intervention. Then a glass was smashed which the security guard responded to immediately and well but the thing that really concerned me was big pieces of broken glass were just left on the floor with staff walking past. People were wearing summer shoes so it could have been a really nasty if they had stood on it. When it was clearly obvious do one was going to sort it, we picked the glass up and the staff looked at us as though we were crazy when we tried to get them to put it in the bin. I know it's a roudy bar and not judging by our standards but leaving big pieces of broken glass on the floor like this is just negligent...
