VABA KOHT — Restaurant in Tallinn

I can only recommend this place with some reservations.

On the positive side, the prices are very reasonable and there’s a good variety of dishes — pasta, meat, and fish options, so there’s something for everyone.

However, I ran into some issues during my visit. A lot of items on the menu weren’t actually available. I first tried to order the fish and chips, only to be told they were out of it. Okay, no problem — so I went with the schnitzel instead. “Sorry, we don’t have that either.” Seriously?! If a dish isn’t available, why is it still on the menu? I even asked if anything on the menu was still being served, and the waitress pointed me to the pasta dishes she had already tried to steer me toward — I guess to avoid me getting any more “bright ideas” and picking something else they were out of.

I ended up going with the dumplings, which were actually pretty good — no complaints there, especially for the price.

What really annoyed me though: when I tried to order a beer, I was asked for ID. I’ve been drinking beer for 8 years now, legally for 4. I didn’t have my ID on me, so I literally had to show a photo of myself in army uniform holding a rifle before I could get my drink.

The location itself isn’t particularly nice, and the music was more annoying than enjoyable.

All in all, it’s a solid enough spot if you’re not too picky and just want a cheap bite — as long as you’re okay with only 2–3 dishes from the menu actually being available. And to be fair, aside from the ID situation, the waitress was...

Amazing restaurant 9 minute walk from old town. The atmosphere is very modern, the food is extremely authentic. And well priced. The service is phenomenal. We came here two nights out of three nights and wished we came here every single night of our stay in Tallinn. The mains are approximately €7 to €10 each and the appetizers between 2.5 € to 5 €. VABA KOHT restaurant at Pärnu mnt. 32, 10141 Tallinn, Estonia, was a great find for my brother and me when we visited Tallinn - it features authentic Estonian food with a contemporary flair and affordable prices. It is located just a block from Kaarli pst which makes it a convenient alternative to the glitz and prices of Old Town. We chose to eat there twice while in Tallinn.
