Disappointing. The food is prepared excellent, so bravo to the kitchen. But to the rest, so many elements just make for a poor experience. Very, very slow and infrequent service. Allowing guests to talk obnoxiously loud on phone at table and play video on phone with loud audio in a fairly romantic courtyard. So NOT a fine dining experience. Uncouth, non etiquette diners should be reminded by staff where they are. Had to go to counter and join a line of 4 to pay the bill. Very Hot time of year and they need fans and misters. Not sure why the lady continued to talk in fast French after 3rd time of knowing I have about 3 sentences in my French skills. Pricing in general very good. If they could just get their service right.

English and French review - French in 2nd half Booked weeks in advance, had high expectations but when we arrived, no one in the restaurant to greet us. Waited around and was finally greeted - not very warmly. The waitress was obviously stressed. Then we were taken to the courtyard and seated - right behind a wall and drainage pipe in a puddle. We thought it was a joke and when my partner asked if we can move he was very rudely told by the maitre’d there is rain expected and this is the best solution. Anyway - more people arrived but were seated in the the courtyard - no rain or excuse them. We were ignored for 20 minutes but in that time saw a lot of chaos and confusion - the staff seemed amateur. Not for wanting to ruin our night even further we decided to get up and leave and spend our money elsewhere. Life is too short. And maybe this restaurant does well only on the quiet nights. Réservé des semaines à l'avance, avait de grandes attentes mais quand nous sommes arrivés, personne au restaurant pour nous accueillir. J'ai attendu et j'ai finalement été accueilli - pas très chaleureusement. La serveuse était visiblement stressée. Ensuite, nous avons été emmenés dans la cour et assis - juste derrière un mur et un tuyau de drainage dans une flaque d'eau. Nous avons pensé que c'était une blague et quand mon partenaire a demandé si nous pouvions bouger, le maître d'hôtel lui a dit très grossièrement qu'il pleuvait et que c'était la meilleure solution. Quoi qu'il en soit - plus de gens sont arrivés mais étaient assis dans la cour - pas de pluie ni d'excuse. Nous avons été ignorés pendant 20 minutes, mais pendant ce temps, nous avons vu beaucoup de chaos et de confusion - le personnel semblait amateur. Pas pour vouloir gâcher encore plus notre nuit, nous avons décidé de nous lever et de partir et de dépenser notre argent ailleurs. La vie est trop courte. Et peut-être que ce restaurant ne réussit que les nuits calmes.

We had the most amazing experience. To start with, the staff was excellent. We were welcomed in a open and warm way. They were very nice and paid attention to the details. Next to that, the food was absolutely mindblowing! We took the menu with accompanied wines. From start to finish we were amazed by the quality of food, different tastes and how well the suggested wines paired with it. I would highly recommend to anyone to visit this lovely restaurant. When we come back to Avignon, this will be our absolute “go to” restaurant.

We just had an amazing dinner here. The courtyard seating is like a scene from a movie - absolutely gorgeous setting. But the food was the show stopper. I had the raspberry tomato gazpacho for an app & sea bream over black rice for an entree. My husband had the giant prawn app & veal over eggplant tapenade entree. They were all absolutely delicious. We had just gotten to Avignon after visiting a 5 star resort in Provence (Michelin rated) & this little restaurant - which just reopened with new owners & chefs 10 days ago - was far superior to our previous dinners over the past 2 weeks. No joke. The “new” Restaurant L’Essentiel has a very bright future & will undoubtedly be center stage as a top spot in Avignon by the end of the season. Shout out to our amazing waitress from Bulgaria who spoke French & English & kept us entertained with her bright personality too! Hope to make it back here again before we leave. Truly excellent...

My husband and I had dinner in this restaurant with 4 friends last Friday. I had raspberry tomato gazpacho as a starter and sea bream over black rice for a main. These dishes are included in 36 euro menu. Others had a more expensive 48 euro one with fois gras and giant prawns choice for a starter and veal over eggplant tapenade as one of the mains. All dishes were superb, amazing creativity in terms of taste and presentation. And taking into account the price, this was truly unbelievable. We came from Geneva where such quality menu would be at least three times more expensive and even for this price it would be hard to find. I am surprised to see the price range for this restaurant $$$$. This is not true. We wish this young, dynamic and clearly very talented team good luck. As soon as we are in Avignon, we will be back to this place. Thanks for a...
