Bistro Régent Bastille — Restaurant in Paris

We went for a meal with our toddler here, and while the food and the service were good, the atmosphere was horrible as at the table next to ours, a child under 10 was beaten by a man (could have been his father), and also abused by his (probably) mother, pulled by the ears, sat on lap and getting severely spanked, constantly shouted at etc. It completely destroyed my mood as I can’t stand abuse to this level, especially when it comes to children, and while everyone was watching, nobody said anything! The staff witnessed it as it happened every few minutes, there were at least two tables of police officers having dinner there and a bunch around due to the olympics, however, nobody alerted the authorities. I am visiting, I don’t speak any French and I didn’t know whether that’s maybe legal, but I think the staff should have measures in place to handle these situations, it’s their duty as it happened on premise! I don’t care about my mood, but my heart is breaking for that child who is in wrong hands! Anyway, for mishandling this, I would not go back there out of principle. Checked legislation in the meantime, and it’s illegal to abuse children privately or in public, so all I can do now is...

Je me rends rarement dans un restaurant pour écrire une critique négative, mais l'attitude de la serveuse Katia lors de ma récente visite (samedi 11 janvier 2025) pour fêter mon anniversaire mérite d'être soulignée.

Dès notre arrivée (nous étions 12), son comportement a été loin d’être accueillant. Son ton était sec, presque condescendant, et nous avions clairement l'impression de la déranger à chaque demande, même la plus simple comme demander une carafe d'eau. Elle semblait pressée et agacée, ce qui a créé une ambiance extrêmement inconfortable tout au long de notre repas.

Son manque de professionnalisme était évident. Par exemple, nous avions commandé une bouteille de vin, mais elle est revenue avec une bouteille déjà débouchée, le bouchon simplement remis dessus. Nous lui avons alors demandé poliment de revenir avec une autre bouteille et de la déboucher devant nous. À notre grande surprise, elle a levé les yeux au ciel, manifestement agacée, et semblait ne pas comprendre notre demande. Finalement, elle est revenue avec une nouvelle bouteille, qu’elle a débouchée sans un mot. Elle a ensuite posé la bouteille sur la table de manière froide et expéditive en lançant un simple "Voilà", sans proposer de faire goûter le vin ni même apporter de verres. Ce non-respect des standards de base du service ont renforcé notre sentiment d’inconfort.

Rien n’a changé au fil du repas : tout au long de la soirée, elle a maintenu une attitude hautaine et un ton ouvertement condescendant. Honnêtement, je n’ai jamais été confronté à un comportement aussi déplacé dans un restaurant. Cela semblait tellement surréaliste que j’ai encore l’impression d’avoir fait un mauvais rêve.

Un service chaleureux et attentionné peut transformer une expérience culinaire en un moment mémorable. Malheureusement, Katia a fait exactement l’inverse. Même si la cuisine était correcte, cette attitude a complètement gâché notre soirée. Nous ne reviendrons plus jamais...

Egalement, le jeune serveur à l'entrée, dont je ne connais pas le nom, n’a pas été mieux. Quand je lui ai demandé où étaient les toilettes, il a répondu d’un ton sec et froid, sans même un sourire : "Bah c’est en haut." Franchement, ça donne l’impression qu’il y a un vrai problème de service dans ce resto. Si on n’aime pas son travail, autant laisser la place à des gens plus motivés, avenants et accueillants. Bistro regent is cheaper version of the famous relais de l'entrocote. The sauce is the same, The chips are the same, the green salad maybe even slightly better and yes maybe the steak is slightly lower quality (although you have a choice or other options, such as salmon or tartar or even a burger) but its half the price and in my opinion much better value theres no queue at the door or 'traditional old school rude service' you might experience at the relais. These bistrots exist all over France and do well. Parisiennes might say that you should go to the original but that's because they spend all their money eating out because they have to live in tiny apartments!
