I had a magical experience at Shangri-La Paris back in December! I was looking at proposing to my partner at one of the Shangri-La properties from Toronto, Hong Kong, Cebu and Paris. It all started with emailing the hotel for proposal, engagement, and venue ideas and the Paris team gave me the confidence that this was the place to be! My first touch point was with Giulia who provided me the warmest email. She mentioned that every wedding proposal has been an astounding “YES!” She understood my request, needs, and enlisted a few options from booking the correct room, alternative ideas around the hotel, and providing dining options. The challenge I had was that I wasn’t sure if I would fly to Paris in time due to the weather in Canada. Everyone was flexible to hold our reservations as I was literally reconfirming I would be there as I was boarding the plane from Canada! During this process Giulia, Nurul, Camille, Maxence, and Nadia from the service center were able to facilitate all the booking information and questions I had over the past few days.
Shangri-La Paris team is truly outstanding from all guest touchpoints from the moment you arrive at the reception, to interacting with the bar tenders at Song Bar to the hostess and waiters/waitress at L’Abeille Restaurant. From the moment I arrived at the reception and provided my name, the lady escorted me to the elevator and advise me of the secret room number to the Song Bar. (I think she had notes that I was going to propose! As had the biggest grin when I provided my name!). When I arrived at the beautiful decorated Chinese themed bar from the Song dynasty era, the bar tender/waitress were so attentive providing superior service. Magically that evening, the outdoor terrace was open after being closed for weeks! (Thank you if you opened it for me!!). Watching the beautiful Eiffel Tower light up and beautiful views directly across the river was so romantic. I ended up proposing to my partner in this beautiful private terrace under the winter lights! By the time we closed the bill, the bar tenders knew we had reservations downstairs. When we arrived at L’Abeille, we were greeted by our names despite meeting for the first time! (Wow! Amazing service!). We ended doing the tasting menu with wine pairing and everything was absolutely delicious. The entire team (sorry I couldn’t catch everyone’s name) was truly outstanding. Their attention to detail from pouring wine, putting the chair/napkins back in place, clearing dishes on time, timing of service of the dishes, and serving the cheese platter were all exceptional and above and beyond fine dining establishments. Their engagement with guests is even more astounding! For example, when I walked to the corridor, Nadia (who I was emailing at the restaurant) personally greeted me wishing me congratulations again and made reference she was the one I was speaking with the past few days! She was managing the front desk and also entertaining guests as they arrive, left for the evening, or were waiting to use their private restroom.
Overall, I want to thank the entire Shangri-La Paris team as they really exceeded hospitality from the heart. The next day, I received warm wishes and congratulations from both Nadia, Joseph (manager of the restaurant) and the entire L’Abeille team. I will definitely be visiting again soon! The entire establishment role models and truly works cohesively as a team from every guest touchpoint of what a true luxury hotel...
Read moreFantastic location with great views on Tour Eiffel (and the half of Paris next to it). Exquisite interiors. Great restaurants (Monsieur Bleu for example) of the Tokyo pavillion in 100 m from the hotel.
All the rest has some small peculiarities.
After discussing an hour of the cleaning with the manager, the next day we did not have the cleaning at all until I called. (No, we did not have any sign left on the door like your manager imagined later).
When we asked a concierge to book a taxi to Louvre, he did, but didn’t say Louvre is closed on Tuesdays. Big thank you shoutout to concierge after this nice trip, with an advice to learn well the working hours of the museum number 1 in Paris.
Another time we asked the concierge to advise us a good restaurant where we would walk for 20 minutes (to enjoy Paris), and we were told to go to a bistro just behind the corner. That’s funny, I mean no problem for us to use Google maps, but why not just give a proper answer.
Hammams are totally useless, why won’t you build a good sauna instead. Where a wife can talk to her husband, instead of separated sitting in those ‘hammam’ corners that feel like wardrobes. (Look how well the area is done at Le Damantin Paris to compare).
To get to hammam and pool you need to dress up to go past the lobby. It’s impossible to get there dressed for swimming, no. So “spa” does not have a relaxing mode. It’s not relaxing to dress up to jump into a bath in your room after swimming. By the way there’s no bag for spa visits in the room to bring back your wet swimming suit, you’ll have to go past the lobby having your wet bikini in your hand.
When you get out from the warm hammam, you’re right in the cold wind from the air condition. Another relaxing experience. You can’t jump out of it, you have to open the doors of the box with your clothes. With the code. Don’t forget it, or you’ll freeze right there, wet and relaxed forever. (I got a running nose the next day.)
Breakfast (rather mediocre) cost €124 for two. I mean, its okay if you have breakfast like in Waldorf Astoria Versailles, but then you need to pump the skills of your chef + have a bit more of an atmosphere. By the way I would recommend to know the provider of viennoiserie in Astoria, they have the best ever pains au raisin (which you said you did not have at all, although they were on the neighbour table… it was pain to see that pain au raisin… the next day though it turned out that it was horrible anyways so okay don’t miss it much).
The in room dining is okay, although I would not say it’s worth ordering unless you’re in between the hours of eating in Monsieur Bleu.
By moving from the petit dej to the room and then to spa you’ll be eventually falling out of wifi, you will have to change it manually. This becomes crucial when you realize there’s bad coverage due to thick walls.
Overall, I found the hotel too pretentious for this kind of things. The staff is dancing around always excessively polite and ready to help, but the end feeling is like “why?” - shouldn’t they just also be more human to match the careless level of the rest of the hotel.
Nevetheless it was fun, and we’re here for...
