Rice and Shine Berlin — Restaurant in Berlin

I want to share a deeply uncomfortable experience we had at Rice & Shine a few nights ago.

The waitress serving us was extremely rude throughout the evening and acted in a way that made us feel both unwelcome and targeted. She repeatedly claimed the card machine “doesn’t work,” despite our attempts with multiple cards (including a UK-issued Mastercard and Visa). Each time, she manually cancelled the transaction herself.

When my mother politely asked to see the card slips, the waitress became agitated, raised her voice, and insisted on “cash only.” She then aggressively grabbed my card from my hand and forcefully shoved it into the machine; an alarming and unnecessary escalation.

We are not from Berlin and couldn’t help but wonder if this treatment was due to us being foreigners. My partner eventually left to withdraw cash just to end the confrontation.

When I calmly asked for a receipt for tax purposes, the waitress ignored me and walked away.

It's that hour when everyone’s five beers deep and thinks their taste buds are invincible. I was part of that crowd. Intoxicated, hungry, hopeful. And then... reality slapped me with a chicken drumstick on a stick. Bones everywhere. Like, are we supposed to eat that with hands that just high-fived half the street? 🥩 Beef dish was absurdly salty. Could’ve seasoned ten more plates with that. 🍠 Sweet potato fries? Very good food, very tasty and very good looking. It almost felt like a fine dinning restaurant just for the effort of trying to make the plates very pretty and tasty. Even the drink had spices or fruits to make it look more appealing. The menu is varied, also the starters are interesting and unique. The portions are quite big and the ingredients are fresh. I had the prawn curry, the only thing I didn t like it was the fact that the prawns had the skin on, and this wasn t mentioned in the menu.
