I was pretty excited to eat Yuk Hoe (Korean Tartar) since it's one of my favorite Korean dishes. I lived for a year in Korea and I'm pretty used to how it should taste. The Yuk Hoe came drenched in sugar, like a dessert. It was sweeter than the Makgeolli. There was so much sugar that the sugar grains couldn't dissolve in the sauce and were cracking under my teeth. This is not how Yukhoe should taste at all. It was completely uneadible.
The waiter was not Korean and had no clue how it should taste, but still tried to justify it, saying that Japanese like it that way. The Japanese group next to us confirmed that in Japan Yukhoe is not sweet like that either, and the waiter looked surprised.
