FOOD & DRINKS Okonomiyaki in Düsseldorf is not very common. That is why I wanted to see how good it actually is. If I am not mistaken, what they serve here is the Osaka style okonomiyaki where everything is mixed in the batter and served as a thick pancake. I much prefer the Hiroshima style where it is more of a thin pancake and the ingredients sit on top of that and also often comes with fried noodles. It gives more layers of texture and is less heavy on the stomach. But that is just my personal preference. Osaka style oknomiyaki can be pretty filling and I did the mistake in ordering it with the fried chicken. Batter on batter and on top of that with Japanese potato salad. While the size of the pancake is pretty small, it can fill you up in no time. And if not then just add some protein and cheese on top. You won't go home hungry. The execution of the okonomiyaki is fine. I am just not a fan of this style because the pancake can be so dense. That is just me though. Other than that I would have preferred to do it myself. I also find it more fun that way but having an experienced chef to do it for you is by no means a bad thing for the majority of customers. Furthermore I'm happy to see that they also offer vegetarian items.
SERVICE I think the service was alright. It felt very formal which is not my preferred style of service but that doesn't make it bad. You will be in good hands.
ATMOSPHERE Here comes what I think is the big seller of this restaurant besides of the okonomiyaki. The decoration is just phenomenal but also very untypical for most oknomiyaki restaurants you find throughout Japan which are more simplistic. While most of the other Japanese style restaurants in the area definitely try to adopt and make a more modern approach to interior design, this place takes a slightly different direction. This place is packed with decorations about Japan. From the traditional big lamps to the Japanese sake containers on the wall to the cute details all around. This place wants to make you feel as if you were in Japan not just by the food but also with their sense of decoration.
RATING This place can be packed if you come here with a group of more than two and want to sit at a table. I highly recommend to reserve a table to make sure you don't have to wait too long. Come here if you miss Japan or if you want to immerse yourself into Japanese culture. This restaurant is...
Read moreReally nice restaurant, super friendly staff with very bad food. This place offers commercialised, europeanised japanese food. You habe bunch of varieties which i think is the reason why this place cant offer good food. I have never seen a good ramen place which offers okonomiyaki and yaki soba and wagyu steak among with 20 other dishes. But thats definitely what an average european guest likes, and this place is another proof of how making good business is not only about making good food. Price is ok for what you get. If you dont know what authentic japanese food is like, this place will be a success for you. Like I mentioned, staff is super friendly, atmosphere is cozy and nice, very eye catching, bunch of things to choose from. The food is nevertheless below average, in fact i was very disappointed to have been there. Düsseldorf has always been THE city to get japanese food in europe, but from today on, not anymore. I just have been lucky enough to have been to jusg right places. Düsseldorf also does have disappointing restaurants like this one. To food: Okonomiyaki definitely isnt homemade, at best its frozen imported which they use for all the variations. So they use same base „okonomiyaki“ and just put different toppings on top of it. The okonomiyaki itself has a lot more of the batter than the cabbage, the pork we ordered was just.. a disgrace. There are multiple different version of okonomiyaki which differ regionally, but this one was just 7/11 convenience store quality at its utmost best.
Yakisoba, the noodle wasnt cooked enough before being stir fried, i assume they just soak it in the water and stir fry it, was very salty although i eat saltier than average people. Beer was the best. We all had one bite of each at the most and left the restaurant as soon as the beer was done. Wasted 20 minutes and 60€. Definitely not returning and...
Read moreI recently visited this Japanese restaurant that specializes in okonomiyaki, hoping for a unique culinary experience. While the food was undeniably delicious, the overall value left me somewhat disappointed.
The fried aubergine with miso sauce and the grilled tofu with mushrooms in a thick dashi broth were standouts, bursting with rich umami flavors. The balance of earthy, salty, and slightly sweet notes made these dishes truly enjoyable. The aubergine was, however, quite oily.
However, despite the taste, the portions were quite small for the price. Paying 17€ for two simple vegetarian starters felt excessive. Additionally, the okonomiyaki, starting at 16€ for the vegetarian option, was tasty but also quite small and not very filling.
The service tending to my takeaway order was friendly and professional, which was a plus, but overall, the food is overpriced for what you get. If you're after good flavors and don't mind the cost, it's worth a visit. Otherwise, you might find better...
