Cafe Extrablatt Frankfurt Eschenheimer Tor — Restaurant in Frankfurt

My partner and I visited this restaurant in mid-June 2024, drawn by its late-night hours during the busy Euro soccer season. While most patrons opted to dine on the lively patio, we chose the quieter indoor seating. Unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant.

Despite ordering something as simple as two burgers, the wait for our food was surprisingly long—nearly 30 to 40 minutes. This extended delay, while frustrating, was overshadowed by a more concerning issue. During our wait, we observed a mouse running across the dining area floor. I captured this on video and took photos, as it raised serious questions about the restaurant’s cleanliness and overall hygiene.

To be fair, I’m not certain whether the restaurant has an ongoing mouse issue or if this incident was due to the doors being left open on a busy evening. In a bustling city, it’s challenging to find any restaurant completely free of pests. However, seeing this in the dining area was still concerning.

When our food finally arrived, the burgers were quite tasty, but I couldn’t shake my unease about the cleanliness of the kitchen given what we had witnessed. While I understand the pressures of a busy evening, especially during a major event, this experience left us feeling both disappointed and uneasy. I guess some restaurants and bars rely on frozen food but even an Aldi frozen pizza is a better tuna pizza than the one I got served here last Friday. It tasted of disappointment and despair, with you only a vague hint of the fish-like aroma that was probably based on the brown-grey substance that the waiter claimed to be tuna, despite all evidence to the contrary. Accompanying this exquisite dish we ordered a Cuba Libre, that would have come in handy to wash down this sad affair. Now a Cuba Libre is a simple longdrink that I though you could not mess up even without any bartending experience - it's coke, rum, and a few drops of lime juice. I soon -well, soonish because of the 20 min wait time- learned that this was wrong. The yellow concoction I received tasted intensively of some old and forgotten citrus, with only a vague hint of coke, and the barest suggestion of rum. It tasted like a whiskey sour, if you refrained from the whiskey and double down on the sour. It seems Cuba is not as Libre as I thought, at least in this Extrablatt. All The toilettes were broken and they had no alternative for their customers. The staff was quite unhelpful about it, too, even taunting a friend (part of our table) who inquired about the situation.
