I discovered my love for well-made coffee a few years ago in New Zealand and had the chance to try quite a few (third-wave) barista places throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland since then (I travel a lot for my job). The Coffee Nerd is pretty high up in my ranking next to the pioneers in Berlin and Hamburg. Owner and staff are sympathic and authentic. Nothing is worse for me than a corporate compliance-smile and good morning when I enter a cafe. At Coffee Nerd you will get a real smile from real people ;) Thomas, the owner, puts a whole lot of energy in obtaining a high level of consistency in high quality. The eagle eye will spot a few tools the baristas are using to make that possible. The fact that the coffee is made on a Slayer coffee machine (which is one of the most exclusive coffee machines that can be bought for money world wide) speaks for itself. Ususally two different types of coffee are available - one that is more fruity, one that tastes more like chocolate or nuts. I had to laugh about one of the previous posts that the coffee would taste watery, maybe the guy burned his tongue on a "Italien Cappuccino" in the bakery (sorry for the diss but it's just ridiculous). The frequently changing selected coffees from small roasteries are lightly roasted to ensure maximum aroma vs strong but bitter taste. Order a macchiato if you like an intense milk coffee ;) Little snacks come from an awarded bakery (best in Germany or something like that) or are home made. I know - it might sound like a sales pitch but I can't help it, I'm just a fan ;) the Coffee Nerd is a real addition for Heidelberg and I wish there would be more places like...
Read moreWaited 10min for 2 cappuccini, at a not busy moment.. Tasted soft, because (?) of amount of milk.
Barista lady was a bit grumpy. Didn’t ask for type of coffee or milk. When she brought it outside she gave the plate with 2 coffee. When we asked het for a question she was already walking back. After questioning for sugar, we had to follow her inside for some sugar.
Received a friendly reply of the owner after this review, that the coffee is softer than regular, but full of taste. That is indeed true :-) But didn’t received flat whites, but cappuccino. Therefore our taste was a bit soft.
Owner told us in the reply that we were not so friendly, what I would like to bring nuance to. As mentioned, barista lady didn’t ask or say much in beginning, to explain their unique coffee, types, choices for milk etc. This is what we are used to when going out for (specialty) coffee. Maybe this was because the bar was almost closing, I don’t know.
We are very happy for you that you have many happy and returning customers! But a little welcome intro for new customers might be nice :-)
Will update to more stars, because coffee was fine, toilet was clean. Only not so much choice and/or...
Read moreI don't usually leave reviews, but I've got to make an exception for this place. I dropped by on Sunday morning for a flat white. I like 'good' coffee, and I have high standards (since I was fortunate to live in London whilst the coffee shop explosion happened, and I have a good friend who is a roaster). Oh my – this was the best flat white I've ever had. Absolutely unreal velvet milk texture which kept it all the way to the bottom of the cup. But that was only the half of it. The coffee!! That such complex, detailed, flavours could be tasted through the super sweet milk was amazing. I had a chat with the guy brewing – and I'm assuming he was the owner. Because he was phenomenally knowledgable, and talked me through his whole 'pre brewing' technique he's using on the Slayer machine. If you like quality specialty coffee, and you're in Heidelberg, you must visit coffeenerd. If you've never had really good coffee, go taste some here and have your standards raised to another level. If there were Michelin stars for coffee outlets, this place would be a 3* – "worth a...
