Schwarzer Walfisch — Restaurant in Heidelberg

We had breakfast there twice. The first time, we were served by a friendly young lady, the food was delicious, etc. (Although the orange juice is very small)! The second time, we were served by a young man, also friendly, but even though we ordered exactly the same thing as the first time (an English breakfast and a late-sleeper breakfast), there was a lot of difference. My Americano was just a small cup of coffee, while the first time, it was a large cup, as an Americano should be. The bread basket only had a few slices of bread, and the first time, the basket was almost overflowing with bread. Also the drinks were served after we already got our breakfast. I don't know why it was served completely differently and less well-cared for than the first time? Maybe they think we're only tourists? If we had been served just as well the second time, I would have given it an 5 stars overall. As a general rule I avoid negative reviews in favour of just reviewing places I enjoyed, but I’ll make an exception in the case of Zum Schwarzer Walfisch mainly because I was surprised how ordinary it was. Good stuff first - the atmosphere and look of the place is really pleasant, and the salmon eggs Benedict was just gorgeous. A generous amount of excellent sauce Hollandaise with lovely soft eggs & nicely garnished. But I’m pretty certain the Continental Frühstück was done by someone else who didn’t give 2 sh..ts because, despite costing 50% more than the eggs, it was flat, stingy and unappealing. The promised croissant was missing from the bread basket and because the staff are so poor at scanning the room for customers requiring attention, after 15 minutes I was so frustrated I just paid & left ( having waited 10 minutes at the cash register because their brilliant system allows only the server who took the order to ring it up ! ). Crazy, because the amount of staff was ample to deal with things, but they were all in 2nd gear. Left a really bad taste...

My friends (more than one!) suggested me this place since long time ago, and finally I've got a chance to try them Breakfast menu with my family. I had "Sugar & Spicy" and that was best choice. My plate includes fresh orange juice, French toast, and multiple flavors of cooked vegetables (sorry I forgot to take picture this). How they present on the dining table / Location / cost performance / service are perfectly my five starts rate. They have huge selection of breakfast menu, and foods serving speed are really fast. ( I remember almost took within 15min) we glad that booked a table the day before, otherwise hardly get a table without reservation. (it was weekend) If you are in Heidelberg city, you should try their foods and professional services. We have a one year old child and they gave us a kids seat immediately.
