My recent visit to Alter Simpl in Mannheim left me pleasantly surprised. The restaurant's unassuming exterior hides a cozy and inviting atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. As a fan of traditional German cuisine, I was excited to explore their menu, and I was not disappointed.
The interior has a rustic charm that perfectly complements the dishes they serve. The staff was friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. I opted for one of their classic German dishes, and it was clear that they take pride in maintaining the authenticity of their offerings. The flavors were rich and satisfying, reminding me of homemade meals cooked with love.
While the food was undoubtedly a highlight, I did find some room for improvement. The pacing of the service could have been a bit smoother, and the variety on the menu, while good, could be expanded further.
In summary, Alter Simpl offers a delightful journey into traditional German flavors in a warm and welcoming environment. With a few tweaks, it has the potential to become an even more exceptional dining destination. For those seeking a taste of authentic German cuisine, this restaurant is certainly...
Read moreWe visited Alter Simpl for dinner again this year after visiting it a few years ago when in Mannheim. We remembered cozy atmosphere and delicious schnitzel. This was still true after 2 years. Unfortunately, we hadn't made reservations, so we ended up sitting at the bar, directly in front of the bartender, which was a bit awkward, but ended up being fine.
I tried the local Dunkel beer and my wife had a heffeweisen, both of which were excellent. Like most German beer, they were smooth and delicious, and went very well with well cooked meat.
I tried the jagerschnitzel while my wife tried the ziguenerschnitzel. These were just as fantastic as we remembered. Huge cuts of meat smothered in delicious gravy. In my case, with mushrooms, and in hers, peppers and onions.
Service was very good. Very fast and friendly. Our schnitzels did take a while to come out, but I think it was based on how incredibly crowded the place was.
The atmosphere is typical German, with lots of dark wood and a fake yule log on the screen in the corner which I...
Read moreI had the Palatinate triplet consisting of a beef liver dumpling (Leberknoedel), a patty made of pork offal (Saumagen) and a sausage. The choice of the Leberknoedel was a shot to kill since I knew I like liver and this one was indeed very good. On the other hand, I was new to the Saumagen and I'm glad I had the occasion to try it. I know it's supposed to be spiced but I couldn't taste much of that. The sausage was like many others and I think a bit out of place on an offal dish. Everything was with lots of Sauerkraut and gravy that were a very good accompaniement and some nice white baguette to help pick them up
To drink I had the Rotes Raeuber of Eichbaum, a local amber lager in my opinion very appropriate with the dish.
Very kind of the staff to let me try also the Eichbaum Export from the tap before (not) ordering it.
It was a Tuesday evening, we had reserved a table and the service was fast...
