California Bean — Restaurant in Munich

Open early and the service team was ready to go on the dot. What that means is for people like me that wake up early, the service team was awake, smiling, and incredibly inviting.

I took the suggestion of the reviewer before me about having the eggs toast with avocado. I was not disappointed, specially when traveling I yearn for salad. The tomato tasted amazing by itself. The salad was expertly dressed, the avocado was perfectly ripe, and the eggs were cooked perfectly.

Because they did such a good job, and I wanted to be a little picky, I would only suggest a slight improvement. I would suggest a different type of bread to me to quality of the rest of the dish. Outside of that I was incredibly surprised and will be coming back again for the same dish in a day or two.

As for the service, there was so many excellent qualities that I observed. If you haven't already noticed, I'm a little particular about food and service. I was amazed to have observed the service staff sitting in each one of the seats making sure that the table was perfectly measured away from each seat and bench and that the table settings were perfect. That is attention to detail which I so manifest itself in the service that received. Fast service, respectful distance, speaking in my language (which I am incredibly grateful for the effort).

We were on the lookout for a good breakfast spot in Munich and came across California Bean, which looked promising online. Arriving on a busy Sunday morning, we expected the place to be packed, and it was. We were seated at a table in the back, which, unfortunately, didn’t live up to the rest of the restaurant’s aesthetic. The table had cheap plastic flowers and a dirty paper tablecloth, which felt out of place and set a disappointing tone.

The real surprise came when the food arrived. As someone who regularly reviews brunch and breakfast spots, I found the food to be just okay—it tasted fine but didn’t live up to the price point. The issue wasn’t the food itself but rather the overall value. At these prices, I expect an exceptional experience, not just in terms of the food but also the presentation, cutlery, and ambiance. Unfortunately, plastic cups and cutlery don’t cut it at this price level, especially when compared to other establishments offering better quality for the same price.

The one redeeming factor was the staff, who were super nice and attentive, trying their best to make our experience pleasant. But for me, the hype surrounding this place is hard to understand. While the food was decent, it certainly wasn’t worth the premium price tag.

An airy and bright cafe serving up California inspired breakfast food and coffee. The staff here are great! I walked straight here upon arrival in Munich with my luggage. The server that greeted me took my bag and made sure it was safe then escorted me to a table. I was told it was cash only but that I could order and dine then get money from an ATM down the street no problem. This was reiterated to me several times to ensure that I relaxed and enjoyed my meal. All the dishes are named after various areas in Southern California. Being from Los Angeles this tickled me. I wound up ordering the Hermosa Beach dish. It was hash brown with caramelized onions, cheese, bacon and fried eggs with some sprouts on top. The dish was filling without being too heavy. The bacon was to die for after being served the equivalent of sliced ham so many times in Europe and being told it is bacon. The bacon served here is a crispy, salty delight! Even though the restaurant was full, I was served in a timely manner and my server checked in with me several times while I was dining. After I finished my meal, I was directed to the ATM and returned in less than five minutes to pay cash for my meal. No fuss, no muss! As my first dining experience in Munich, California Bean did not disappoint. I can't wait to return and try other items...
