Hofbräuhaus München
Description
The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is a beer hall in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, originally built in 1589 by Bavarian Duke Maximilian I as an extension of the Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München brewery. The general public was admitted in 1828 by Ludwig I. The building was completely remodeled in 1897 by Max Littmann when the brewery moved to the suburbs. All of the rooms except the historic beer hall were destroyed in the World War II bombings. The reopening of the Festival Hall in 1958 marked the end of the post-war restoration work.

A quintessential and popular Biergarten in the heart of the Munich city center, I had to stop here even knowing that everyone else who is traveling to Munich also feels the same way. I had to, and I'm so glad that I did. First off...THIS PLACE IS HUGE! The famous HB Hofbrauhaus is an icon when it comes to drinking (and eating) establishments in Munich. One of the six breweries in the metro Munich area, its beer did not disappoint. A steady stream of customers continued to file in but nobody was walking out. In an hour the capacity of folks inside doubled. We sat down about 11am and only waited about 4-5 mins for a server to greet us. A one liter beers seem large and they are! But, cmon....you have to. And, so we did. Two 1liter original HB cold brews! We also grabbed a Luke warm pretzel and shared an order of weisswurst (a traditional morning food for Germans) since it was before noon. The sausage was amazing. Subtle hints of seasoning in a ground veal white sausage in a firm casing. The pretzel was a combination of soft and chewy in the thicker parts with a nice brown salty crust and crunchy thin areas. And of course the beer tasted way better than our American brews. My suggestion is to definitely visit here. But get here early as from what I saw and heard, if you wait too long, you'll be standing. And beware. Certain tables have signs over them which denote them as a "locals" table and they have certain rights to the table. I'm not sure that they would kick you out, but they do have "dibs." Prost!
Loved our experience here at the HBeerhouse. This was our first time in Germany and we had a tour that ended in this wonderful beerhall. So much history here! In case you're as oblivious as us, in Germany, you seat yourself and a waiter will come to you. We did just that and our waiter was delightful, especially considering the experience we have had so far with rude waitstaff. So that was a pleasant surprise ❤️ he recommended lots of dishes and gave me realistic expectations for the food we ordered. We ordered the pork, meatloaf, and bread dumplings. Our kids (6 and 9) didn't like most of it, which our waiter warned us about. This cuisine is very Bavarian and authentic, it was really great, still. The meatloaf was a slice of spongy meat, something I cannot describe. It was tasty! The texture was the trickier thing for me. Same with the dumplings. We ordered the seasonal winter beer which was good. Had a great time with the live band and ambiance of the hall. There are specific tables you don't want to sit at, that are marked above them with a sign... starting with S. These are reserved by specific families yearly, so don't sit yourself there. Also, the people going around carrying boxes of pretzels are not with the restaurant and sell separately, and only accept cash. Definitely go here when you're in Munich!
Hofbräuhaus, München, a Lunch Experience So we tried to get into one famous Munich restaurant, Weißes Bräuhaus, but it was packed by 12 noon! (Should have made reservations) So we then decided to go & do lunch at the Klassiker, The Original Hofbräuhaus! Was kind of our farewell lunch after 6 weeks touring 6/7 cities in Germany! Our Friends, Elizabeth, and her Daughters joined us, so we had a good table of 5. (We haven’t seen one another for 20 plus years, great reunion) Enough space, not too far from the Bavarian Band/Orchestra but far enough that we could still talk to one another. The menu hasn’t probably changed in a hundred years, except they now have the vegetarian options, which was perfect for one of the girls! Service was decent enough, considering the place was 90% full, so we knew it wasn’t going to be super fast, we sat back and ordered! Bottle of the finest Sekt for the Ladies, of course I had to do the Bavarian thing, a proper Beer, but I never go for the huge 1 ltr mug, 1/2 ltr would suffice! Best dish that we ordered was the Weißwurst for the boss, and the Kaiserschmarren for the girls, although the Kaiserschmarren was not properly chopped (cut into cubes, weird) but taste wise pretty ok! The Weisswurst was perfect and so was the pretzel, then again if they can’t get the national dish right, something would be very wrong! Then our Friend ordered the Obatza, these are 4/5 cheeses, chopped and semi puréed with a side salat, personally didn’t like it, but she thought it was good! We shared Rahm-Eierschwämme (creamed mushrooms) and bread dumplings, the Dumpling could have been used as a canning ball, hard, tough and not really tasty! The mushrooms primarily button mushrooms, few chanterelles, Bugger to me 4 out of 10 at best! Disappointed. Myself I had a Schweine Schnitzel Wiener Art, (pork schnitzel Vienna style) I could have used that as a sole under my shoes and walked home and it would have survived! The Potato Salad looked and tasted like mass production potato puree, terrible! Best rating 3 out of 10. The Apple Strudel I ordered for dessert, was such that my friend asked me were the Apples were! Good question, tasted like Apple Purée/Mousse , goodness & of course the vanilla sauce probably commercial, bugger another disappointing dish. 3 out of 10 Yet the atmosphere was fun, a great place to enjoy the view & surroundings, and as our friends said, this was about catching up, not about the food! Great and appropriate statement! Enjoy the pictures, and the Bavarian sound! #germany #traveladventures #drivingholidays #fun #avtivities #lunch #hofbräuhaus #munich #münchen #friends
