I once did a piece on them for local TV back in the '90ies. Having studied Japanese at university, I knew the place from it's very beginnings. I ended up there last Saturday, and I was a little taken back. The once highly charming flair had all gone. The traditional door curtain: gone. All those charming pictures with hand written Japanese/Romanized names of a HUGE variaty of great traditional Japanese everyday plates: gone. The staff though was very polite, very quick as usual, but the menu was the second big sigh I took. Well, economically it made perfect sense, they picked what people would have ordered the most and limited the choice down to that. However to the price of the authenticity the place once had, sadly the only reason back then to pay the heavy prices, Shoya had always had. The food was good but pretty standardized, and - sadly - a little more "McDonald-dised", meaning: while the food was absolutely flawlessly prepared and tasted great as ever, it looked like a perfect copy of what I saw another customer served when I entered the place. It looked too perfect, even to high Japanese standards. It lacked the traditional Japanese love for hand made things with all their (human) imperfections. So, although I can still recommend Shoya, I can only give 4 stars now. Shoya has once be awesome, now it's only slightly above average taken the experience, the choice...

Nun gut, was soll`s.

We came here to eat lunch. There weren’t many customers at that point, so we got a sit immediately and the food came out pretty fast.

Their recommended tonkotsu shoyu ramen was okay, not perfect, but good enough. The used noodles were a bit disappointing and the meat a tiny bit dry.

We liked the gyoza, as well as the rice. The toru toru ebi were also just okay. The shrimps were nice, but the tartare sauce, was just a fried egg…

At the end, after we had ordered and got the food, one of the staff clicked their tongue to us cause we were eating too slow? The friendly atmosphere disappeared after having ordered. When it was time to pay, they charged us wrong. After mentioning the wrong charge, they did apologize (felt forced) and gave us the correct amount of change.

Authentic Japanese experience, highly recommend! It's so rare to experience the real Japanese experience at the heart of Munich, without burning the hole through my pocket. This restaurant really honor the Japanese culinary art by decorating it in a traditional way, making it very cosy and welcoming. Sushi served in room temperature, so everything is freshly prepared right out of the kitchen (and well worth the wait). While other sushi bars might trade quality to lower the cost, I hardly find anything to complain at this bar. From the taste of the rice, to the thickness of the seaweed, the tenderness of the sashimi, I know I'm getting the real deal, and they are worth every penny. The Tonkotsu ramen looks straight out of some cookbook, and tasted equally impressive. This will be my go to sushi bar to years to come.

Everyone who ever tasted the real japanese ramen knows it: the hole it leaves in your heart. After few days of sipping the last drop of broth you realize it. It grows day by day and leaves you only with increasing desire for the next bowl of tonkotsu, shoyo or miso ramen. To satisfy this specific desire I decided to visit Shoya. No need to tell you that expectations were sky-high. No surprise with 3-star rating, the hole in my heart is still there. The broth was OK but not the real deal, meat was good but lacks the right flavor and the egg was boiled on the point but had not the taste. I only judge the tonkotsu ramen which were far from original though eatable. People striving to fill their hole won't find relief here.
