Hofbräuhaus, München, a Lunch Experience
So we tried to get into one famous Munich restaurant, Weißes Bräuhaus, but it was packed by 12 noon! (Should have made reservations)
So we then decided to go & do lunch at the Klassiker, The Original Hofbräuhaus!
Was kind of our farewell lunch after 6 weeks touring 6/7 cities in Germany!
Our Friends, Elizabeth, and her Daughters joined us, so we had a good table of 5. (We haven’t seen one another for 20 plus years, great reunion) Enough space, not too far from the Bavarian Band/Orchestra but far enough that we could still talk to one another.
The menu hasn’t probably changed in a hundred years, except they now have the vegetarian options, which was perfect for one of the girls!
Service was decent enough, considering the place was 90% full, so we knew it wasn’t going to be super fast, we sat back and ordered!
Bottle of the finest Sekt for the Ladies, of course I had to do the Bavarian thing, a proper Beer, but I never go for the huge 1 ltr mug, 1/2 ltr would suffice!
Best dish that we ordered was the Weißwurst for the boss, and the Kaiserschmarren for the girls, although the Kaiserschmarren was not properly chopped (cut into cubes, weird) but taste wise pretty ok! The Weisswurst was perfect and so was the pretzel, then again if they can’t get the national dish right, something would be very wrong!
Then our Friend ordered the Obatza, these are 4/5 cheeses, chopped and semi puréed with a side salat, personally didn’t like it, but she thought it was good!
We shared Rahm-Eierschwämme (creamed mushrooms) and bread dumplings, the Dumpling could have been used as a canning ball, hard, tough and not really tasty! The mushrooms primarily button mushrooms, few chanterelles, Bugger to me 4 out of 10 at best! Disappointed.
Myself I had a Schweine Schnitzel Wiener Art, (pork schnitzel Vienna style) I could have used that as a sole under my shoes and walked home and it would have survived! The Potato Salad looked and tasted like mass production potato puree, terrible! Best rating 3 out of 10.
The Apple Strudel I ordered for dessert, was such that my friend asked me were the Apples were! Good question, tasted like Apple Purée/Mousse , goodness & of course the vanilla sauce probably commercial, bugger another disappointing dish. 3 out of 10
Yet the atmosphere was fun, a great place to enjoy the view & surroundings, and as our friends said, this was about catching up, not about the food! Great and appropriate statement!
Enjoy the pictures, and the Bavarian sound!

Read moreI visited this historic beer hall alone after a business trip, as recommended by a local guide—not just for the food, but also because of its heavy historical background. This is Munich’s oldest beer hall, steeped in tradition and once a controversial political meeting place. A visit here feels almost like a pilgrimage.
However, solo visitors should be prepared. I waited 20 minutes to be seated, translated the entire menu, and waved at multiple servers, yet no one acknowledged me. Eventually, a kind German couple noticed me and invited me to join their table. The man explained that the service here follows a strict system: if you're not part of a group, you will likely be overlooked, since each server is assigned specific tables.
He ordered another drink, and finally the same waitress who had walked past me many times came over. He told her, “Please also take this gentleman’s order.” That was the first time someone took notice, and I was finally able to order.
The man smiled and said, “Everything here is great—except the service system.” He even pointed out three white men behind us who had been sitting for over 20 minutes with no service. Moments later, they confronted a server and then disappeared. I assumed they left, angry and disappointed.
Thanks to that kind couple, I eventually got to enjoy my meal. We toasted with beer, and when they left, I gave them a warm handshake to express my gratitude.
Overall, this beer hall is a meaningful place for those who want to experience Bavarian history and culture. However, if you're traveling alone and no one helps you after 20 minutes, it may be better to leave and head across the street to Azxxx am Pzzzz, which offers a much more...

Not worth the wait or time at all. There is no system, the wait staff are overworked (or can't be bothered). We came by twice, the first time, our own fault as it was dinner rush hour, the 2nd it was at 3pm. It was crowded (ok understandable) as it was famous but our table was not cleared, we had to push the used utensils and tissues aside ourselves.
Waited a little longer to have the plates removed and our order taken, but the drinks took 30 minutes to come. It has been an hour and my food has yet to arrive.
Sure it's exciting and happening but this is just a HUGE tourist trap. Save yourself the time and explore Munich, go do something else and eat elsewhere after visiting.
Edit: 2 out of 3 of our orders came after 1 and a half hours, my main came after 2 hours. Sacrifice your entourage to hold the seat while you do some shopping then come back to eat. The food is mediocre and was very salty. Not worth the precious time sitting in a loud, crowded and dirty table.
The service was lacking but it was not the fault of the poor waiter. He tried his best to host all the tables and guests around. It was clear that he was way overworked and overtasked for the full 3 hours we were there.
The concept of a huge bustling beer hall is great but the execution is poor with both staff and patrons not getting the best experience.
The huge crowds and long wait for tables was mostly due to the time taken for food to come out. This leads to a vicious cycle of waiters shouting at waiting customers blocking the way and customers getting frustrated at...
