This was our first samle of Greek food (in Greece) since we arrived in Athens. Our visit was off-season, so we were the only ones there. Not for a lack of good food. I'm no expert in Greek food, but I do enjoy eating and cooking. The older fellow who greeted, seated, served, and possibly cooked for us was a kind and patient person. He that welcoming grandpa vibe. The menu is in Greek and English. We tried the mushroom soup, chicken soup, fried pork chop, chicken kebabs, tas kebab, and zucchini balls. The tas kebab gave me that comfort food warmth and happiness that's hard to describe. If I were local, I'd make this a regular spot just for that dish on a cold day. The pork chop was pretty tasty, too. Well seasoned and cooked just right. The zucchini balls weren't that exciting. I don't think I'd order them again. I didn't try the other dishes, but I heard that the mushroom soup was really good and the chicken soup was OK. The chicken kebab was also reported as being very delicious. Everything appeared to be made from scratch. We were there in January, so we ate inside on the...
Read moreWe had a great time. This place is run by mr and mrs Panos, an elderly couple. All the vegetables are organic, as they grow them themselves. The food is all made-to-order so just as the other reviews said, be prepared to wait a bit. But we brought a book and had a lovely evening.
The food itself was fresh, warm and good. I’m happy I got to visit this place, since Athens can be a bit touristy at places, its really nice to taste the truly traditional Greek food. You just know its made with love. It is as eating at your grandparents.
The restaurant itself was also lovely, it is built in 1916 so it was beautifully ornate. And there is a rooftop terrace! Bonus: next to Greek and English mr and mrs Panos also speak German since mrs Panos is from Germany.
TDLR, worth it. But make sure to bring stuff to entertain yourself while waiting. Be mindful of this when bringing young children or if you...
Read moreWe stumbled upon the sign for Taverna Panos at the end of the road where our hotel was, and decided to eat there after reading reviews on here and because it looked like the kind of antidote we needed after wandering through the tourist hell that is Plaka. Good decision! We came the following night as well. It’s clearly a family-run establishment and we were warmly welcomed. A lovely menu: over the two nights we had a “meat varieties” plate which was a mixed grill for two that included the tastiest loukaniko (sausages) imaginable; a succulent fish souvlaki which they cooked with rice instead of fries for me; and “spetzofai” which was a rustic, earthy oven baked dish of sausages and peppers in a rich tomato sauce. I’ve uploaded photos of all of these. With a half litre of nice house white wine the bill each evening came to less than €30...
