If you by any chance find yourself in Chania Crete eat food and drink wine at @asprosgatoschania This place will blow your mind. The food is simple, but tasty and balanced, only good quality groceries.
They waiters are sweet, service minded, quick and attentive without being in your face all the time.
On our first day we went for a walk and went in to this quiet street looking for something to drink. My attention got drawn by a smell that reminded me of my childhood: lamb. It was noon but we wanted a salad so we ordered a tomato salad and a green strawberry salad. The green strawberry salad was really nice, but those tomatoes… it was pure love. Almost as if I had plucked them myself from my granddads farm. The dish is simple - tomatoes, Greek cheese and sea salt, but do order a bit bread on the side. You don’t want to miss out on that juice in the bottom of the plate.
Next day of course we came back for dinner and the experience was even better. My husband ordered a wild mushroom risotto, which is vegetarian and I ordered traditional Cretan Pilaf with that lamb that had my attention the day before. I’m sure all other dishes are really amazing, but the lamb was so tender it melted on my tongue and the pilaf was velvety with a really deep taste of the fond. No doubt that this place firstly thinks of the ingredient. This place is all about quality, quality, quality first. No doubt the chef spends a lot of effort, time and love to prepare the dishes.
Of course I can’t forget to talk about the wine hence it’s a wine bar. The menu is good and it’s a really good quality, mostly Greek, wine. Forget all about the classical retsina wine that gave Greek wine a bad name. The wine here is good and you can buy it by the Glas or the bottle. The selection is interesting and they have a good selection of vegan and ecological wine. The owner actually came out and helped us to choose wine that fitted our food, and when it was time for the Greek tradition of fruit and raki after we payed the bill he prearranged os with words “usually we serve raki to this but you seem to like wine so this is a dessert wine I’d like to present to you”. I mean a place like this deserves all the compliment.
If you want to get out of the touristy Chania, eat good wood and drink fabulous wine, but still feel vibe of the old town Chania take a trip to this place. I’m usually picky, but I can’t find one bad spot at Aspros Gatos Wine Bar. Maybe only that the portion are to big for Me to eat up.
And of course they have a street cat they take care of, which made it even...
Read moreAmazing!!! Go here! Now! The very best food I have had in Crete. The atmosphere is comfortable, classy, and romantic. The mozzarella bruschetta was suggested to us by the patrons at the table next to us. I thought it would be too much but I'm so glad we ordered them. Perfectly cooked the bread is ever so slightly soft in the center making them tastise and easier to eat than any bruschetta I've had in the past. I got the green salad has a beautiful, light, and slightly minty dressing. The strawberries and greens are perfectly fresh, and the baked Cretan cheese bites cover all the flavor notes. To bring the meal to a close I shared the kataifi dessert. Every flavor detail is perfectly placed and accentuates the others. It comes with a avocado mousse, mastiha creme (this flavor can sometimes be overwhelming, here it delightfully light and enticing), espresso syrup, and peaches that are the best prepared peaches I've ever had. I would have licked the plate but I'm planning on coming back so I figured it was best to be polite. ;) Also, side note, the bread is really good and I recommend getting it so you can soak up any...

If Asprosgatos were a person, it would be a charming Greek serenader, serving tuna like a love letter and salad like a memory of summer. The tuna steak? Not just any fish – this was Poseidon's personal gift from the grill. Perfectly cooked, juicy, and so flavorful that even the fork seemed to fall in love with it.
My wife's strawberry salad, on the other hand, was like a spring festival on a plate. Strawberries danced among the greens like a Dionysian celebration – fresh, balanced, and visually stunning enough to be framed.
The wines? No complaints – and in Esa-speak, that means: “They paired so well I considered adopting the wine list.” A perfect companion to the food, the mood, and an evening to remember.
Rating: 9.8/10 – If restaurants could win Oscars, Asprosgatos would be nominated for Best Lead Role, Best Supporting Dish, and Best Original Score (because the wine sings...
