Anchorage Traditional Mezedopolio is a hidden gem just a side street away from the bustling city center of Heraklion. The location is perfect for those looking to escape the typical tourist spots. The taverna is run by a wonderful couple, who feel like a warm and welcoming grandma and grandpa.
The ambiance is authentically traditional, making you feel right at home. The menu features classic tavern dishes like moussaka, stuffed peppers, and feta, all lovingly prepared by the grandmother herself. Each day, the fresh dishes are explained in English, adding a personal touch to the dining experience.
The food was incredibly delicious and skillfully prepared, all at a very reasonable price. For dessert, we were treated to something sweet and raki, along with a delightful chat on the house. We enjoyed it so much that we returned multiple times during our stay. This taverna truly made us feel at home, and we can’t recommend it...
Read moreThis restaurant is a true hidden gem! It offers honest, homemade food – whatever the chef has cooked for lunch that day. The menu changes daily, and it’s worth arriving early because once it’s sold out, it’s sold out!
Even as vegetarians, we were absolutely delighted. We tried dishes we probably wouldn’t have ordered otherwise – and they were simply fantastic! Every meal was prepared with love and tasted like a comforting home-cooked meal. But the absolute highlight was the dessert with caramelized carrots – without a doubt, the best dessert we have ever had!
The prices are very affordable, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It truly feels like coming home. We left the restaurant feeling happy and fulfilled – and we will definitely be back!

Read more17 days in Greece--our favorite restaurant. It is hard to describe how much I like Anchorage. Imagine going to your grandmother's house for Sunday dinner, and that your grandmother is a great cook! From the minute you step inside, Mrs. Irini and Captain John treat you like family. And like your grandmother's house, you do not have dozens of food items to choose from. A few dinner dishes; all that we tried on two occasions were excellent. Large portions and low prices equal tremendous value. Nothing we ate in Athens, Naxos, Rhodes, Santorini, or elsewhere in Crete compares. I tried unsuccessfully to talk Captain John into opening a restaurant in my home town of Los Angeles, so I guess we will have to return to Heraklion for the best in...
