Central Park — Restaurant in Municipality of Heraklion

We visited twice: firstly for a drink in the mid afternoon and then for dinner later that same day - Friday 16 September 2022. The menu choice was massive and varied which is the reason we came and the service we received was great…that was until one person spoiled it. The lady who took our orders was rude from the moment she first opened her mouth to ask “do you want water” with no eye contact. Initially we first thought that, because English is not her first language, she didn’t realise that maybe that approach was rude. However, upon my dad ordering a Club Sandwich, she interjected and said, quite rudely, “I don’t recommend that”…she repeated it a second time. She gave no reason for her comment and/or no alternative. My parents, in their 70’s had health reasons for choosing this, and so went ahead and ordered it anyways seeing she gave no other reason not to. She then muttered something which I didn’t hear and I asked her to repeat it, which she didn’t but shook her head. Dad said later that he thought she had said “ignorant”. Coming from Australia, We have travelled through Greece for the last 3 weeks and have nothing but good things to say about the Greek people and how lovely and genuine they are. This woman knows nothing about us, where we are from, what we have done nor the reasons for our choices. If her attitude was because she thought we should be eating traditional food, well had she asked would have known that we have filled our bellies with authentic Greek and Cretan food the last 3 weeks and opted for a different option - which, by the way, is our prerogative!! If this had of happened in Australia, she would no longer have a job. She has effectively tarnished the restaurant’s reputation. Being rude and judgmental is not acceptable and will get you nowhere. I’ve also never experienced a situation where the waitress does NOT recommend something on the menu. If you have a bad attitude that negatively impacts and offends those people who are effectively paying your wage, it might be time to consider a career change! Thank you to the rest of the restaurant staff for making up for this woman’s inappropriate behaviour. A review of two halves: overall I thought it was a pleasant dining experience, with good food, good service, and a very nice environment.

The menu is vast, in multiple languages, and caters for a huge audience so that’s a great start. The staff are friendly and helpful, speaking very good English. The outside seating area is tucked against trees with large canopies to shield from the sun making it lovely and cool.

My chicken club sandwich was delicious, really well prepared, and the portion was huge! I thoroughly enjoyed it. My partner had the sea bream, and unfortunately felt this could have been better. The skin was not crispy as hoped, and the flavour was quite “simple”. It was a good piece of fish, but just didn’t meet expectations. It also came with no additional sides/accompaniments (no salad, chips, etc), and where my club came with a huge portion of chips included. In fairness, the menu did say “sea bream” with no additional text (but my club also said “chicken club” with no additional text and it did come with chips) so worth clarifying when you order. That said, the club had enough chips to share with neither of us having room for dessert (which looked incredible!).

An excellent choice if you like the local delicacies along with a myriad of other regular food items such as pasta, risottos, salads and many more. For starters we had shrimps with an absolutely flavourful lemon oil which complimented the shrimps so well. For mains we chose to have mushroom risotto which tasted like it was made with love! It was so scrumptious and we enjoyed and devoured every morsel! Seeing as we were impressed with the risotto and the shrimps and were not filled, we ordered linguine with shrimps which was very dissaoppointing as we were expecting it to be as delicious as the risotto. But alas, it was quite far being remotely close to as delicious as the risotto. They kindly offered to not add it to the final bill which was kind and sweet of the staff. For dessert we ordered the truffles and The Chocolate both of which were divine! The truffles need to get a special mention as they tasted absolutely delectable and every bite would melt in your mouth! They were absolutely divine!
