THE WORST MEAL IN GREECE. DISGUSTING OLD SEAFOOD, I'm sorry to have to leave a negative review but with the carelessness of this restaurant I think its best other potential customers know what they are in for before visiting, as I wish I was. This is the only restaurant I have been in my life and out of all the countries I have travelled to that the food was so disgusting we struggled to eat it and in the end, after no consideration by staff after pointing it out, we left half of it. If we weren't as hungry as we were and weren't asked to still pay for all the dishes, especially at the overpriced amount they commanded, we would have left all of it. The two fish dishes which we complained about because they smelled, were clearly not fresh and both squid large and baby squid had not been cleaned and still had their guts, beak, quill and eyeballs intact. The baby squid hadnt even been cleaned. The most revolting seafood I have ever tasted in my life. The waiter tried to tell me the guts left intact inside the squid were actually the best part, the egg sac! But, did you know squid LAY eggs? They don't keep egg SACS inside them. Complete lies told to disguise the laziness and lack of consideration by this tavern who don't want to hear or deal with any customer complaints. The waiter also proceeded to try and defend the disgusting seafood by informing that the insides were left inside because they are fresh while at other restaurants if they clean the squid for you it means they are frozen. But when ordering the baby squid, I noticed an asterix and another waiter advised me that the dishes with asterix iclude frozen seafood. So another complete contradiction. Squid should not smell fishy if it's fresh and if the squid is big enough to have eyeballs and a spine it should be cleaned out, not deep fried whole and served to customers to eat entirely. The baby squid were too battered and fried in old oil that did well to attrmpt to cover up the old fishy flavour but in the end just made us feel unwell. The zucchini fritters were filled with other ingredients like carrots which weren't listed and just tasted like grain and flour, completely tasteless. We have had zucchini fritters almost at every greek restaurant we have been around Greece and these were the worst. The house wine was atrocious too. The only decent item was the mousakka and the complimentary shots and polenta slice with cinnamon they give to all tables at the end of the meal complimentary. The shot was actually very nice. The location and atmosphere of sitting on the beach was the only pleasant part about this experience but not enough to ever wish...
Read moreThe food was excellent, really tasty and well prepared. The prices were surprisingly affordable! The location was nice, and the atmosphere pleasant.
However, what ruined the experience a bit for me was the behavior of the staff. While they were generally polite, they were also far too pushy. Right from the beginning, we felt pressured to order certain food or drinks like aperitifs and cocktails that were being promoted. Even though I later saw they were just regular items on the menu. I don’t like feeling pressured in a restaurant; I always plan to order what I want, and I don’t appreciate being steered in a specific direction or made to feel like I should choose what was suggested. At one point, when the waiter started explaining what they recommend, my daughter had just moments before asked me what I wanted to eat. I replied that I was thinking about sardines. The waiter then said they offer sardines as a starter. Which immediately made me feel like I shouldn’t order them because it wouldn’t be enough, it's a starter after all. So, I chose something else instead.
While I was still eating my last bites with a fork in hand! the another waiter was already standing by the table asking if we had finished. Since I was still eating, he simply stood there waiting until I took my last bite, then immediately took my plate. That is one big no go for me. Right after that, another waiter came over with the dessert menu. We said we’d take a look, and just seconds later, while I was in the middle of a conversation, he interrupted me to ask which dessert we wanted to order. That moment was the last straw for me and I told him that they were being too pushy and asked for the check. He turned around and left without a word.
Even though the food and location was great, and the staff was friendly overall, the service style was just too intrusive. It gave the impression that if you spend more, you're welcome but if you don’t, you're expected to eat quickly and leave. Again loved the atmosphere and the food...
Read moreNikolas Tavern is a restaurant that has left a deeply troubling impression due to its overtly racist behavior and unscrupulous practices. During my visit, I encountered several instances of discrimination that are unacceptable in any establishment. The staff displayed clear bias and disrespect towards customers based on their race, making the atmosphere uncomfortable and hostile.
Upon arrival, I noticed that customers of certain ethnicities were given less favorable seating, and their service was notably slower and less attentive compared to others. This blatant discrimination was further highlighted by the way the staff interacted with different patrons, showing preference and politeness to some while being dismissive and rude to others.
Adding to the negative experience, Nikolas Tavern engages in deceptive billing practices. They bring the check in Greek, making it difficult for non-Greek-speaking customers to understand the charges. This lack of transparency felt like an intentional attempt to confuse and potentially overcharge patrons. Such dishonest behavior only exacerbates the already poor experience and reinforces the feeling of being unwelcome and taken advantage of.
The food itself was mediocre at best, but the sour experience of racism and scamming overshadowed any culinary aspects. It's disheartening to see such practices in a place that should be welcoming to all. Racism and deceit have no place in the hospitality industry, and it's important to call out and avoid establishments that perpetuate such toxic behavior.
I strongly advise against visiting Nikolas Tavern. Instead, support businesses that uphold values of equality, respect, and honesty. There are plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy a meal without the taint of racism and scams. Let's ensure that our dining choices reflect our commitment to a fair and...
