My husband and I decided to find a restaurant in Santorini to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We discovered Ambrosia and noticed the magnificent reviews it got from customers. I sent a couple of e-mails enquiring about the restaurant but received no reply. Consequently, we decided to go ahead and book the restaurant two months in advance and requested to sit on the side of the terrace overlooking the sea. Eventually there was a reply stating that our table was at 22:00. We thought this was too late so we sent another e-mail requesting for an earlier time but there was no reply. Again we sent another e-mail three weeks later and there was still no reply so we decided to leave it until we arrived.
Upon arrival, the waiter took us to a table that I did not request for. We were sat on the terrace but not on the side as requested. When we sat down and ordered our meal, we had noticed that a couple were getting ready to leave. We kindly asked the waiter if we could move to their table after the couple had left, as it was a table we requested. The waiter said he would have to check with his manager.
Arriving back, the waiter informed us that it was difficult. He mumbled something about time being short with the dessert (we weren't quite sure what this meant) and they may be expecting another couple (so a table 'may' have been booked). My husband and I decided to leave it.
A group of four arrived and were seated next to us on a table which already had four chairs placed. The table that we requested was still empty after 30 minutes.
Eventually another couple left so the group of four had asked the waiter if they could push the two tables on the side together to create a table of four overlooking the sea. The waiter went to check with the manager and came back to set the table up for the group. The manager also came upstairs to confirm that he had made that decision.
At this point, we felt we were treated unfairly as we had requested for this particular table two months in advance and had kindly asked them on the night. We were rejected on both occasions.
We called for the waiter to ask why the table was given to the group and not to us. The waiter hesitated and said that he had to check with the manager. The manager did not come to us to explain but instead, sent another waiter to explain that the group of four were on a table of 'two' (despite four chairs surrounding the table) and that they were moved because there was more space. This still does not explain why they were seated at a table of 'two' in the first place.
Of course, this had annoyed us because despite our request (twice), the manager did not have the courtesy to explain the situation himself. It really did reflect the e-mail communications prior to our visit (ignoring and not responding to any e-mails).
Overall, our entire experience was a disappointment. It definitely could have been better.
Communication was absolutely terrible, awful and pointless. Don't bother send them any enquiries as they will not reply. They will only reply to confirm bookings.
The starters we had (lobster soup and soup of the day) was delicious but the main course (lamb cutlets and duck) and dessert (dark chocolate leaves with mousse) was average.
The entire meal was over-priced. I believe you can find somewhere better and worth its value.
The service by the waiters were good but I believe we were treated unfairly. We clearly had a problem with the table situation afterwards but were not acknowledged by the manager; he didn't have the courtesy to explain the issue to us however he made the time and effort to show off to the group of four that he did them a favour so he had obviously placed importance on them over us (maybe because we were a younger group and did not look as important).
However, the ambience was lovely and romantic but unfortunately our night was spoiled by the manager's unfair, unreasonable and unjustifiable decision.
I would suggest you find another restaurant...
Read moreThis was supposed to be the most romantic dinner we have ever had.. Unfortunately the terrible service overshadowed the great food and amazing views. Below are all the issues that we had during our visit. I will also post the review on trip advisor as well. Ambrosia is supposed to be an experience, not just a meal. The service was so bad that we almost left before our meal arrived. The server was that rude and disinterested. Please see the below concerns in detail.
We mentioned that we were 10 mins late due to us JUST having gotten engaged 30 mins prior. He didn't even congratulate us and acted as if he was annoyed.
He didn't even state his name when we arrived.
We ordered a bottle of prosecco and he tried to tell us the Greek champagne was "better". When we stated that it was most likely too dry and that we wanted to stick with prosecco, he became agitated.
As he grabbed our wine glasses he ended up breaking one under the table next to us.
We ordered the tomato soup and I also asked for bread. He stated that the soups would take 20 mins and that he would bring bread. I agreed that was fine. He brought bread and 40 mins later we still didn't have any soup or our meals. When I inquired about our soups, he raised his voice and caused a scene in front of other guests. NOT ONCE DID HE APOLOGIZE OR EVEN ASK IF WE STILL WANTED SOUP.
After our food came out, we didn't see him again for the next 30 mins. We had a long haired server come and take our plates. Our server was nowhere to be found.
I had to pour the last several glasses of prosecco myself.. This is very disappointing.
While we were dining, the servers had the audacity to move a couple to another table after they had already received their drinks and began enjoying them. It was very awkward and everyone was confused on why they had to move.
Again, everything about this restaurant was unprofessional. Very disappointed and I hope you can make things right. Thank you for...
