The Virgin Mary of the Akathist Hymn Church — Attraction in Municipality of Thira

One of the characteristic features of the small island of Santorini (Thira) is the many churches with white-washed walls and feature blue cupola and Ekklisia Panagia Platsani in Oia, the small village perched atop a craggy cliff, with incredible views of the deep blue sea and surrounding islands, is one of these.

Ekklisia Panagia Platsani is the main church in Oia and is located in Caldera Square, the center of the village and is the place of annual celebrations such as Easter when lanterns are placed all around the village and its churches and buildings.

This church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is a traditional Greek Orthodox church. We would have loved to have seen the inside but unfortunatel it was closed when we were there. However, while it looks quite simple on the outside, I have read that it's strikingly beautiful inside with beautiful frescos and icons typical of Greek Orthodox churches. I believe that it also contains many tributes to sailors and other residents of the town.
