Absolutely Unforgettable Dining Experience at Onar – My Favorite Meal in Santorini!
Onar was hands-down my favorite dining experience on the island. Set in beautiful Firostefani, it offers a truly spectacular view of the Caldera—an absolutely gorgeous backdrop, especially at sunset. The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance of modern elegance and relaxed comfort, ideal for a special evening out.
From the moment we arrived, the service stood out: friendly, attentive, and thoughtful. As the evening breeze picked up, the staff even offered us blankets—a lovely touch that made us feel well cared for.
To start, we were treated to complimentary hors d’oeuvres of crusty bread, olives, and a flavorful tomato paste. We did order extra bread, though in hindsight, it wasn’t really necessary given the generous portions.
Between the two of us, we shared the zucchini risotto, village-style French fries topped with Naxos Gruyère cheese, and the chicken burgers. Every dish was a hit. The zucchini risotto was the best I’ve ever had—perfectly creamy and beautifully spiced. The chicken burgers were packed with flavor, with a delicious mustard trio that elevated every bite. And the fries? The Gruyère was a perfect complement—rich, salty, and indulgent.
We paired our meal with two local beers, which were excellent and a great alternative since we don’t drink wine. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate mousse, and I can’t stop thinking about it. It was incredibly light and airy, not dense like most versions, and it absolutely melted in my mouth. To top it all off, they served us a complimentary dessert wine—a thoughtful and generous way to end an already amazing meal.
Onar is a gem. Beautiful views, incredible food, warm service—everything about it was exceptional. I can’t...
Read moreMy wife and I chose this restaurant because some reviews mentioned that the owner’s son was caeliac, so they were very conscientious and had many GF options. We didn’t book in advance because while on vacation, we don’t like to restrict ourselves to a schedule. There were several empty tables in the sheltered area below and in the glass enclosed area on the right. We were only offered one of 3 tables at the back on top, without wind shelter (it can get very windy and cool around sunset). The wait staff seemed very indifferent - very cool. They would be better suited to working a nightclub. When you spend decent $$$ for a meal, you should expect to receive warm hospitality. We are a polite, fit, well-dressed couple. When asked about gluten-free options, the waiter pointed out two items. They had many pasta dishes including a seafood dish, so I asked about GF pasta, first waiter said he’d check, but never returned. The 2nd waiter told us no. When we asked about the risotto, he said he could not guarantee that it was GF. Gave us a strong warning that we would be eating at our own risk. The sheltered empty tables were still vacant when we left. Definitely some kind of bias going on here, as an older couple that had been checking menus along the way ventured in after us and were seated below in the sheltered area. The good part: food was good, the sunset view amazing (same as our hotel balcony), they offered blankets for the cold, and gave us melon liqueur. The bad part: We should have left as soon we were seated - bad vibes...
Read moreFood was good, but unfortunately we were disappointed with the table we received and the greeter at the entrance. I had made a reservation and specifically requested for a table at the front with a good view because we were celebrating a special occasion. The reservation was made around two months in advance. Upon arriving, they provided us with a table that had a pole right in the front of it. The table was also not at the very front down the stairs, it was at the area above the stairs with not as good of a view. That combined with the pole meant the view was not even half as good as the other front tables. We asked whether we could change to another front table but we were told the others were spoken for. I can’t imagine anyone reserving those tables before me on that specific day for those specific times… This was disappointing and we ordered modestly, ate and left. Funnily enough, there were two empty front tables the whole time we were there that both had the prime views that we would have wanted. If we had one of those empty tables, we would have ordered more food, a bottle of wine and stayed there much longer. Needless to say, we celebrated our occasion the next day at another restaurant instead, better view and no...
