Disturbing Experience Masked as Fine Dining – A Cautionary Tale My recent visit to Baltazar Restaurant in Budapest was deeply unsettling, and I feel compelled to share a candid account of what I witnessed and experienced.
From the moment we arrived, it became painfully clear that seating at Baltazar is far from impartial. While there were multiple empty tables, I watched in disbelief as people of color were turned away or left waiting without explanation—only for others to be warmly welcomed and seated promptly. The discriminatory undertones were not just disappointing; they were blatant and distressing. No establishment, especially one that presents itself as upscale, should operate on such exclusionary practices.
Sadly, the food did little to redeem the experience. I ordered the trout entrée, which was not only laughably small but almost entirely devoid of flavor. For a restaurant that seems to pride itself on culinary presentation, this dish felt more like a lazy afterthought than a main course.
To top it all off, the service charge is automatically included in the bill—a practice that’s becoming more common—but what struck me was the awkward pressure from staff to leave an additional tip. The expectation was heavy-handed, which, considering the overall experience, felt not only undeserved but intrusive.
Dining out should be a welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone. Unfortunately, Baltazar fails spectacularly on both counts. I urge anyone considering this place to reflect on what kind of hospitality they’re willing to support.
PS: Thank you for taking the time to respond. There were four of us dining together that evening, and the review reflects our shared impressions of the experience. Three of us ordered the fish dish, which may have been pike rather than trout—thank you for pointing that out. We hope this feedback is taken in the spirit of...
Read moreI definitely do not recommend this restaurant. We visited yesterday before noon, hoping to grab a bite to eat. We ordered a chicken salad, a burger, a coffee, and two cheesecakes. The coffee was served right away, and we waited a short while for the salad and burger — the waiting time was acceptable. The burger itself was average, nothing special. The salad, however, had carelessly tossed pieces of chicken with skin on, which looked unappetizing.
The biggest disappointment was the dessert. After finishing our main dishes, we waited 40 minutes for the cheesecakes, which never arrived at our table. There were only a few people in the restaurant, and the staff looked our way multiple times, clearly aware we were still waiting. When we finally got up to pay and leave, the waitress went to the kitchen and brought out our cheesecakes — which, as it turned out, had been ready for some time. We thanked her and declined them, as the waiting time was simply unacceptable. The waitress seemed surprised.
To sum up: poor organization and prices that are too high for the quality of food and service provided. I absolutely do not...
Read moreThis burger made me forget about my dead dog. No joke, this burger was so good that I completely forgot about the tragic loss my family suffered only days earlier. Goober the Dog was an integral member of our family for over 25 years and we recently lost him as a result an overzealous cyclist who has been terrorising our streets these last few months. We’ve tried to tell him to slow down, but he has refused to listen and we’ve now lost Goober as a result. We do intend on taking this to the police, but before that I wanted to clear my head with a walk when I stumbled across this fine establishment. No joke - the burger was so good that Goober may as well have never existed. Obviously, once the experience was over I crashed back to reality harder than Paul Walker into that motorway barrier, but for those 10 minutes - I was in heaven. 5/5, would come again even if a family member...
