Koller Gallery, established in 1953, is Hungary's oldest private art gallery, located in Budapest's Castle District, near Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion. Housed in a three-story atelier-house, it showcases modern and contemporary Hungarian art, including paintings, sculptures, and prints. The free gallery is definitely a hidden gem and a welcome escape from the crowded tourist areas. There is a small but beautiful garden with sculptures and city views, particularly of the Danube and Parliament Building, from the upper floors. There is also a memorial room dedicated to artist Amerigo Tot. Visitors can explore works by renowned Hungarian artists and international contemporaries in a serene setting.

The staff is super hospitable and are able to explain things in English. Come by for a visit. Check their website or door sign for opening hours.

More info:

The Koller Gallery is a renowned private art gallery located in the Castle District of Budapest, Hungary. It was founded in 1953 by György Koller (1923–1996), a key figure in the Hungarian art scene, particularly in the field of graphic art. The gallery is housed in a three-story atelier-house and has played a significant role in promoting both Hungarian and international contemporary art.

The gallery's history began shortly after World War II, when György Koller also founded the Association of Hungarian Engravers (RMAK) in 1953, to support and promote Hungarian printmakers. In 1980, the Koller Gallery opened its doors as Hungary’s first private gallery in the atelier-house of the Hungarian-Italian sculptor Amerigo Tot. Tot, known for his sculptures and artistic contributions, was closely associated with the gallery, which began to showcase not only graphic art but also sculpture and painting.

In 2010, a memorial room dedicated to Amerigo Tot was inaugurated on the top floor of the gallery. This space serves as a tribute to the artist's legacy, showcasing his work and offering a deeper insight into his contributions to both Hungarian and international art scenes. The memorial room functions as a permanent exhibition center for Tot’s sculptures and is a key part of the gallery's offerings.

The gallery is also home to a sculpture garden, where visitors can enjoy outdoor exhibitions and installations, furthering the gallery’s dedication to showcasing both modern and contemporary sculpture.

From its inception, the Koller Gallery has focused on representing contemporary Hungarian artists, especially those working in engraving and graphic arts. Over time, the gallery expanded its scope to include sculptors and painters. Today, the gallery continues to represent a diverse array of artists, offering a platform for both Hungarian and international talent in the realm of modern and contemporary art. Additionally, it provides art appraisals and services for...

Had this whole gallery to myself and absolutely loved 99% of it. Gorgeous sculpture and painting work everywhere…The one exception was when I stumbled upon a couple horrifyingly soulless AI ‘paintings’ displayed on the wall in the attic staircase. Even before I read the description confirming they were AI, the paintings seemed so out of place and ugly/fake/hollow that I fully stopped in my tracks, disturbed. AI is a terrible insult to real art in my opinion so this left a bad taste in the mouth finishing my tour of the place… but still giving 5 stars because the rest of the gallery was so lovely (especially adored the garden!) and the staff was so welcoming. Best of all, it’s free!

Would love if Koller were to reconsider their inclusion of AI-produced work in the future. Either way, thanks...

Unfortunately for us, the door was locked, and I cannot remember if we had to knock on the door or ring a bell, but regardless, after approximately a 10-minute wait, we gave up. And yes, we did come by during normal business hours according to the sign on the street out in front of the gallery. We were looking forward to visiting, this free gallery, since we are interested in local artist and would have enjoyed seeing some of the works of arts by known Hungarian artist. We did, however, get a chance to at least view and enjoy several sculptures which can be found in the foyer entrance area. Maybe next time we are in Budapest we will give it a...
