DON DOKO DON Japan Bistro — Restaurant in Budapest

In a nutshell:

Food: We went there on a wintery friday evening. I ordered the Vege-Ankake-Don (vegetarian, normal size, 1200 ft) and a miso soup (500 ft). My boyfriend had a big Gyu-Don as a menu which included a tiny wakame salad and a pre-packed azuki bean mochi, a soup and a tea as far as I can recall.

The vegetarian don tasted good, yes, but not inherently Japanese or even Asian to be honest. It might be a weird coincidence, but the taste reminded me of a German stew? Very strong vegetable flavour, no taste of shiitake mushrooms, algae, garlic, ginger or whatever associated one might have spontaneously with Asian cuisine. But, did it taste good in itself? Yes, yes it did.

The miso soup was absolutely delicious. Perfect the way it was. Would definitely recommend it, especially at the given price point.

Although a bit lukewarm, the Gyu-Don was good overall. The flavour consisted mostly of tender beef, ginger and fresh spring onions. The soup was nice as well.

The tea was a cold tea that reminded me of extremely mild cold brew coffee – in a very welcoming and pleasant way!

The fact that there was only one veggie don available was a bit off-putting, but I'd come back just for the miso soup!

Service & interior:

The food came incredibly quickly which was amazing since we were on our way to the airport and just wanted to grab a quick bite and sit down for a short while. The restaurant itself had a welcoming interior with one table on the ground floor that could seat up to 8 people and more seating upstairs. Little decorative elements really made me believe I was in Japan for a second – the open kitchen counter only added to that.

All in all I liked it, although some of the flavours could have been a bit...

I usually don’t write reviews, but it was so good I had to. I’m not a big fan of the Asian cuisine so I was very sceptical, but now I’m a super fan. The miso soup was full of flavour, delicious, the tofu was my favourite. I had a half teriyaki and half nikujaga don and let me tell you… it was heaven. I also don’t like beef that much but this one has a special place in my heart. OOOh and the carrots(and onions), my lord they were the best. Every bite was like tasting magic. Almost made me cry it was so good, couldn’t believe it. Incredible. Like angels dancing on my tongue. I ordered the smaller portion and I was full for hours. 1000000/10 for me. Would go back regularly. Can’t wait to taste it again and try out everything. The staff was very kind, and it was super-fast, got my order under 3 min. the place seems lovely, sunny and clean.

Netes rendelés az értékelések alapján (az egyik házhoz szállító cég oldalán még magasabban áll..), de összességében óriási csalódás. El nem tudom képzelni azt, hogy a népszerű Miso leves autentikus íze és állaga ilyen lenne: adagra minimál, állagra rettenetesen híg, betététek gazdagságát tekintve a minimálnál is kevesebb, az íze pedig egészen lehangoló, mintha egy gombakonzerv áztató levét kortyolgatná a szerencsétlen vendég. A parádé a donburival is folyatódik: a feláras (+600 HUF) nagy adag alig felel meg egy konszolidáld porciónak, de ha olyan lett volna, nem is foglalkoznék ezzel a lehúzással. Nem olyan volt: ragacsos rizs, pár lézengő saláta darab és egy relatíve száraz, elképesztően diszkrét húsadag, melynek fűszerezésére keresem a megfelelő jelzőt: a jellegtelen talán illik hozzá. Két elszomorító fogáson vagyok túl és szerencsére még várat magára a desszert, ami talán megmentheti a rendelést, elhesegetve azt a véleményező agyába befurakodott érzést, hogy beleszaladt egy túlhájpolt, rettenetesen túlárazott, divatosan streetfoodnak -megtévesztően odabiggyesztve a japán behatárolást- aposztrofált, valójában egyszerű kifőzde által nyújtott gasztrolehúzásnak. Ennek megválaszolására érdemes lehet megtekinteni a két utolsó feltöltött képet, a következő aláírással: desszert 880 HUF-ért. Az ízélményt az olvasóra bízom, annyit segítek, hogy a vizuális megjelenéssel van egyenes arányban. Kiábrándító megálló és egy keserű megállapítás: az értékelés sem minden, a sznobéria is a tetőfokára hághat és találhat utat magának ilyen módon, vakvágányra víve egy teljes...
