I'm a non-coeliac gluten sensitive person, so this review is for the benefit of those like me (and of course those with coeliac disease). After reading about the gluten-free options on their website which they promote throughout as 'carefully crafted to be free from gluten-containing products' and that 'they do not stock any gluten-specific products'), my wife and I decided to try this place out. When we arrived, we spoke to the server to clarify about the gluten-free options, as according to the menu it seemed like everything had gluten. It turns they don't really have a dedicated gluten-free offering, and instead just remove or replace sauces with gluten in them. According to the menu in the restaurant, every single sauce contained gluten, however the server mentioned that the information on the menu in the restaurant is incorrect regarding the sauces and that three of them were actually gluten free. As you can imagine, at this stage confidence was dropping fast, but nevertheless, we tried a meal, hoping for the best based on their website claims. Almost immediately, l experienced an intense gluten flare up with discomfort and bloating, most likely caused by cross contamination coupled with generally poor practice and hygiene (the trays used to serve different customers were not washed before being used again when I was there.) It's also worth mentioning that my wife asked for a sauce to be replaced with a gluten-free alternative, which they didn't do despite providing assurance that they would. There was also no indication on the meal that any of our requests had been taken into consideration, such as a sticker or a flag. TL;DR Misleading/untrue information on their website and menus, and, in my case, a huge issue with cross contamination. If you're a NCGS person like me, avoid this dreadful place...
Read moreI ordered the large pokeball and literally 50% of the bowls volume is just iceberg lettuce. I've never had a poke bowl in my life that ever had lettuce in it let alone 50% of the bowls volume. If they put that amount of lettuce in the regular size bolt 90% of the bowl would be lice berg lettuce. The amount of rice in the large bowl was equivalent to the size of a handful. If you're closing your hand. The pink salmon is covered in some sort of sauce so you don't even get to actually see if it's fresh salmon and you can't even taste the salmon because it's covered in the sauce. The amount of salmon is equivalent to maybe 3 normal size bits. You're basically eating iceberg lettuce the entire time 4500 HUF. Nice looking place and nice service. They returned my money and I told them it was unacceptable. They could have made a new bowl but they said this is how the bowls are made so they didn't even try to fix the bowl with more rice.
Edit: You will see from their reply that they try to conflate vegetables with iceberg lettuce. Nobody would have a problem with adding quality vegetables to half the bowl and substitute of rice but you don't get a add cheap iceberg lettuce to literally 50% of the volume of the bowl to fill space. Iceberg lettuce is neither healthy or a more fresh option. It's a literally just a way to provide less product. Iceberg lettuce is basically just air and water that takes up space in the bowl. Poke bowls are already a pretty light meal you don't need to make it any lighter with iceberg lettuce. And if you are going to do that put a disclaimer in the store that says we fill up half of our bowls with iceberg lettuce and show the customer before they purchase what they're going to get. 1 star is more than enough for...
Read moreIchigo in Budapest totally impressed me — a solid 5/5 experience. It’s not a fancy sit-down restaurant, but more of a fast-casual spot with a cool, clean setup and a relaxed vibe. You order at the counter, and the food comes out quickly, but the quality is way above what you’d expect from a fast food place.
I tried a few things off the menu, favorite being the crispy chicken bowl, and everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The ingredients tasted top-notch — the meat was fresh, the rice was perfectly done, and the portions were generous. Perhaps there could be a bit more meat added to the bowl, but that is just my preference. You can tell they really focus on quality, even though the place is super laid-back.
The staff were friendly and efficient, and even though it was busy when I went, service was smooth and organized. Prices were fair for the quality, and I left feeling full and happy.
If you’re in Budapest and craving Japanese food without the formal sit-down restaurant vibe, Ichigo is definitely worth checking out. It’s the perfect spot for a quick, satisfying meal that doesn’t feel rushed or cheap. I’ll definitely...
