I am a beer enthusiast and I especially fond of the Belgian and Dutch ones, so when I came across Mosselen on Google Maps before a trip to Budapest, I immediately knew I have to check it out.
It did not disappoint.
We went there for a Sunday lunch, we arrived when there was no other people there, so I don't know how the place is during a rush hour.
The interior is gorgeous, reminder me of similar places in the Netherlands. The staff was extremely friendly and professional and the food we had there was prepared in a timely manner and was quite delicious. Good stuff, exactly what you'd expect from a place like this.
And the beer. Of course you are mainly coming for the beer. Mosselen has a wonderful assortment of Belgian beer, with all the heavy hitters like the La Trappe and Westmalle line, Kaastel, Tripel Carmeliet, La Chouffe and friends. If you want to break away from your traditional Hungarian lagers and never tasted anything like this before, give Mosselen a try, but be mindful of your dose as these Belgian babies are small, delicious and strong.
My only nitpick is that we did not get a matching glass for our Westmalle Tripel even though their Facebook page states that they serve everything in the corresponding glassware. And no coaster. I can live without this of course, so I would not give a lower rating because of this, but it would have been a nice detail.
Very well...
Read moreUsed to be a big fan of this place, but like so many other restaurants these days, theyve fallen into the habit of forcing you to tip! Staff don't inform you 13% service charge is already included, they just hold the card machine with tipping options - and the "no tip" option is only in Hungarian, so foreign visitors are easily fooled!
I know very well that the "service charge" is taxed and is meant to go to the base salary, but it's not the customer's responsibility to pay for service, it's the restaurant's. It's ridiculous to expect us to pay separately for food and drink, separately for staff salaries, and separately once again for tips. A restaurant bill is starting to resemble a profit and loss sheet! At the very least, they should make it clear what's included and not included.
Very sad that Budapest is descending into "American tipping culture", especially as one of the best parts about Europe was its sense of respect for service staff. It's also disappointing as I love the food and beer here, but the anxiety of having to deal with the uncomfortable tipping situation means I probably won't be back.

Read moreThe tap beers were excellent, I truly enjoyed Kwak from the traditional glass. Fries as a starters were Ok, a bit expensive though. Service was good also, but I set 2 of 5 with a feeling of sincere disappointment, because we were mislead regarding the service charges and ended up paying twice for service. We got the receipt and the bank card terminal where we should select tip % before the payment. We selected 10% on the terminal, and after reading the slip we understood that the 13% tip was already included. We did not expect that we will be asked for the tip selection on the terminal, when it is already included in the slip, and no one from the stuff let us know about it. This is not transparent at all, and it is not fair to double charge for the same service. Moreover, I see same problem was highlighted in another review 4 days back, where the owner promised to improve here. Well, the improvement is...
