The bartender was very friendly and I understand that Iceland is pricey for food and drinks. However, my boyfriend and I went in to Skuli and had a bottle of beer and a glass of red wine (Sidenote: they basically are a beer spot and the bartender stated I could chose red or white wine, not a type of red. This was totally fine by me). The two drinks were 6,000 ISK (almost $58 USD). I paid and then we converted the cost and I asked if she could tell me how much each item was. She stated that she didn't know off the top of her head but the wine was around 1800 ISK. When I mentioned she charged me 6,000 ISK she said "oh yeah that sounds right. Iceland used to have a big alcohol problem so it's heavily taxed".
For comparison we had just had dinner that included a lobster appetizer, two entrees, dessert, and 4 beers for 17,000 ISD.
She made no move to walk me through the cost so either she was trying to take advantage of us on purpose or she messed up and basically was just riding it out rather than correct the mistake. Had we had more time before our tour I would have stayed and pushed back. I would be careful going here. It looks like a cool spot and again, the bartender was friendly, but it is overpriced at best and...
Read moreI came to Reykjavik very excited to try the local beer. I essentially went straight to Skuli after landing at KEF because of its great reviews. My expectations were high and Skuli exceeded them in every front. Their beer selection is amazing. I did the Iceland beer flight which was exactly what I was looking for my first night in Reykjavik. So damn tasty! The location is great right next to everything in downtown but not crazy like some other bars in Reykjavik. The venue itself has an awesome stylish interior. I ended up coming back to Skuli several times. I was fortunate to have the same bartender each time. I forget his name but he was Italian and extremely knowledgeable on beer. I spent a lot of time talking to him about beer where I am from (California). He also was super nice and gave me tips on beers and bars in Amsterdam where I was headed next. I am glad he did, his recommendations were great. He was just a good person and definitely added to my wonderful experience at Skuli. Highly recommend for beer...
Read moreIn the main downtown part of the city (i.e., NOT including the business district where some hotels are located), it will be hard to find a better selection of local craft beers on tap. Note that there is no food to speak of here (only a few snacks for purchase), and it is a bit expensive, especially considering that many of the beers are served in small glasses only. So this is not a place for dinner. There is an arcade cabinet in back, a dart board, and seats by large windows (all plusses). If you are willing to walk about 30 minutes to the outskirts of town, you may find another place with even more beer and food; but this may be your best bet for a variety of local craft beers ON TAP. (I wrote that in capitals because some craft beer bars downtown only carry cans or bottles, which I think kind of misses the point.) P.S. Seems like a lively place where locals like to come for drinks with friends; though that is based only on one visit on a...
