We spent 15 days at the Apotek Hotel, and I am so happy we stayed here. We did not want to rent a car, and this hotel was an ideal hub for all our day trips and excursions. All of the downtown tourist sights, restaurants, and shops are completely within walking distance; the tour bus stops, especially #2, #3, and #6 are within a 5 minute walk. You will need a car if you stay here and have the ability to walk.||The hotel staff was very friendly and attentive; the night front desk attendant, Christopher was especially helpful in setting us up in our room when our flight arrived early and nothing was open so early. Our room, a suite, was comfortable; we were on the 5th floor overlooking a bookstore/coffee shop. We kept the window open to allow fresh air into the room; we also appreciated having a Nespresso machine in the room for our morning "starter" coffees. ||There is a wonderful restaurant and lounge area attached to the hotel, both of which I highly recommend. The restaurant meals we ordered had so much flavor, and in the lounge the drinks and desserts were amazing---the desserts truly looked like works of art. ||When you stay at the Apotek, you also get access to the spa at the hotel next door, the Borg. The spa has a small gym, sauna, steam room, and soaking pool which were all great after a long day of hiking and exploring.||We also used the laundry service provided by the hotel (for a fee, of course). This allowed us to pack less coming, so we could load up with stuff coming home, including a handmade Icelandic sweater.||The only recommendation I would make to the hotel is to improve the mattresses; our bed was a bit springy. Other than that minor detail, our stay was superb!||I highly recommend...
Read moreI stayed in Iceland for a 3 day visit 31-Mar through 2-Apr 2019. In short, every experience with the staff of the Apotek Hotel exceeded all expectations.
Room: I booked a single room and while it was small, it was well furnished in an efficient manner including with a comfortable bed, private shower, toilet and sink, television, and somehow, they managed to fit a Minibar under the desk. The Wi-Fi performed well, and the windows were well insulated from the Icelandic Climate. The room does get extremely warm after a hot shower, so try to plan your shower with an imminent departure from the room.
Service: The customer service was exceptional! The check-in staff gave a genuine, warm welcome and ensured that every need I had was exceeded. I returned for small services such as ice, tour assistance and dining recommendations and they enthusiastically it provided with a smile.
Location: The Apotek hotel is perfect for walking to the old harbor for boat tours, or a short walk (3-5 min) to the Hard Rock Café bus stops and little longer walk (5-7 min) to the Culture house bus stops for Grey-Line Airport Transfers and Tour Pickups. The area is heavily populated with good restaurants and bars. Many downtown destinations are accessible and right on the “Main Street” for shopping needs.
I managed to get a good look at the Junior Suite for a future visit with my Children and appears more than adequate to house 2 children and a adult. I would recommend this to anyone who asks me where to stay in...

Our experience at Apotek Hotel was utterly disappointing, due to the cold and evasive conduct of Assistant Manager Gita. When my husband fell seriously ill before check-in, I called the hotel and Gita told me to email details. I did—and American Express also emailed on our behalf. Gita never responded.
When we showed up with my visibly sick husband, we were made to wait. Gita refused to come out or acknowledge us. She later deflected the issue with “go through travel insurance.” No empathy, no solution. We asked for a one-night refund during peak holiday season—a reasonable request that was coldly dismissed.
The room itself was tiny, poorly soundproofed, and too loud to sleep at night, especially on weekends.
Since then, I’ve seen multiple reviews showing this is a pattern: guests experiencing death, natural disaster risks, or medical emergencies all report the same lack of compassion and rigid responses from this hotel—especially from Gita.
Hospitality is not just about buildings—it’s about people. And this hotel, despite its fancy look, has absolutely no heart. Choose anywhere else where guests are treated with basic...
