A nice boutique hotel with some odd omissions.
The City Center Hotel feels very much like a hotel in progress. I don't know if that's accurate or not, but given that they seem to be actively constructing new amenities (such as a hotel restaurant), it seems fair. The rooms are nice and well-appointed, though there's signs of sloppy renovations such as holes in the wall where fixtures and receptacles used to be.
We also noted some odd oversights; there were no facial tissues in the room, only toilet tissue. We ended up having to go out to the 10-11 to buy some facial tissues. Several of the consumables (soap, shampoo) were also empty or nearly empty when we arrived, though they were refilled by the housekeeping staff during our stay. The hotel also provides only one pillow per person in the bed. It seems that previous residents used the throw pillows from the couch as a second pillow, given that these throw pillows were underneath the bed pillows when we arrived!
Given that this is Iceland, perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the room was the curtains. These curtains are in no way blackout curtains, and they let in the most light of any hotel we stayed at in Iceland! If you are sensitive to light while you sleep you should definitely bring a sleep mask (the ones provided by the hotel are quite rudimentary).
That said, there were also some nice little touches which truly did make this hotel feel like a boutique hotel. The towels they provided were far nicer than an average hotel towel, which was truly enjoyable. The pillows are lovely down pillows which are quite comfortable. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful, which was lovely.
You should also be aware that the hotel offers nothing in the way of parking, though the front desk staff are happy to direct you to various (free and paid) parking options. We were aware that this would be the case going in, and given the quite competitive price of the hotel we considered the lack of parking to...
Read moreFantastic hotel! I stayed at City Center Hotel from April 15-22 in 2023. It quickly felt like my home away from home. Mel, Sunny, Gisli, Johanna, Niels, & part-time resident cat, Baktus are the BEST. They are extremely knowledgeable and happy to make suggestions regarding tours, restaurants, etc. CCH is affordable, clean, efficient, and comfortable. It’s location is prime. You have a short walk to bus stop 1, to catch your tour bus(es). CCH is within a comfortable walking distance to many pubs, restaurants, shops, Harpa, the old harbor area, & pretty much anything in Reykjavik city limits. I have read reviews commenting on noise. This hotel is central to restaurants & nightlife and is conducive to the sounds that go along with that. We slept with our windows open. I wore earpods & listened to music to fall asleep. The noise did not bother me. It would not keep me from staying here again. The blackout curtains in our room were super efficient. The bathroom was a generous size, equipped with a hair dryer. Love that hot water in Iceland comes out piping hot! Rooms are equipped with a generously sized mini fridge, coffee maker, desk, & night tables. Ours also had a wardrobe, futon & coffee table. Very clean & comfortable. Wifi is provided. If you arrive prior to check-in, CCH has a luggage room where your things will be locked safely away until check-in (you can head out to eat or explore). I have to mention the fun, funky lobby-which is very comfortable to hang out in. I have read reviews that complain about CCH not having breakfast available on site. This is not an issue with so many wonderful places to get breakfast nearby. (I believe they can arrange it through a nearby restaurant, though.) The staff at CCH would provide whatever you need/ask for. They go above and beyond to ensure a positive stay for you. Love this hotel and the wonderful people I met there. I hope to get back to Iceland and stay at City...
