If I say this place is all talks and no show, in my prudent opinion, I won't hold myself guilty.

I fetched myself 3units of fruit cake, and 4units of plum cake, based on the recommendations I've received from people I have met and came across. The plum cake is just average, or perhaps below average, and truly isn't worth the glamour the place, and the people claim. Furthermore, it's over priced at the cost of ₹320/- a unit. Secondly, the rich fruit cake, it has a nice cinnamon flavour, and owing to such my expectations were shot high. But, to my misfortune it all shattered down with the first bite, it's unpleasantly sweet, and has a wierd, if not awful, aftertaste. Again, it's overpriced to another extent at the cost of ₹550/- a unit. After paying such, and the struggle that comes along for placing the order during the rush hours, this thing squares up, and truly qualifies for the word, disappointment (sheer).

Again, I may receive a lot of criticisms as and when you read aforementioned, but views are personal, and I reserve the right to be wrong. I did have my fair share of what the place has to offer, and mark my words, I won't...

একটা ইতিহাসের গল্প।

ক্যালকাটা তখনও কলকাতা হয়নি। রাইটার্স বিল্ডিংয়ের মাথায় তখনও তেরঙ্গার জায়গায় ইউনিয়ন জ্যাক ওড়ে। সঠিক সাল জানা না গেলেও, অষ্টাদশ শতকের প্রথম দিকে একদিন কলকাতা বন্দরে এসে ঠেকলো এক সদাগরি নৌকা। নৌকা এসেছে সুদূর সিরিয়ার আলেপ্পো থেকে। নৌকা থেকে নামলেন শালোম আহারণ কোহেন সাহেব। কোহেন সাহেবের নৌকা কলকাতায় নোঙর করে আগে পা দিয়েছিল গুজরাটের সুরাট বন্দরে। গুজরাটি সুতির সাথে বাগদাদী সুতির অনেক তফাৎ। কোহেনের ইচ্ছা ভারতবর্ষে বাগদাদী তুলো ও সুতির প্রচলন করার। কিন্তু বনিয়া গুজরাতিদের কাছে ধোপে টিকলেন না কোহেন এবং কোহেনের সুতি। কোহেন পারি দিলেন ব্রিটিশ রাজের রাজধানী কলকাতায়। কলকাতার নরম মাটিতে কোহেনের মন এবং ব্যবসা দুইই জমে গেলো।

ক্রমে, মোটামুটি ১৮০৫ সালে আরেক ইহুদী যুবক, কোহেনেরই দুঃসম্পর্কের ভাইপো মসেস সাইমন ডিউক কোহেন এলেন কলকাতায় এবং বিবাহ করলেন কোহেনের কন্যা লুনাকে। অষ্টাদশ শতকের মাঝামাঝির মধ্যে কলকাতায় স্থায়ী ভাবে গড়ে উঠলো ইহুদীদের প্রথম বসতি। ততদিনে বাগদাদ এবং আলেপ্পো থেকে অনেক ভাগ্যান্বেষী ইহুদী চলে এসেছেন কলকাতায়। তাঁদের ব্যবসা মূলত তুলো, চট, মশলা এবং আফিমের। খুব কম সময়েই কলকাতার ধনী এবং এলিট বৃত্তে প্রবেশ করে গেলেন ইহুদী ব্যবসায়ীরা।

মনস্তত্ত্ববিদ মাসলোর তত্ত্ব বলে জীবনধারণের বুনিয়াদি প্রয়োজনগুলো মিটে গেলে মানুষের প্রয়োজন হয় আত্মিক আরামের - যায় মধ্যে অন্যতম হলো ভ্রাতৃত্ববোধ, যাকে বলে ফিলিং অফ্ ইনক্লুসন। তাই দেখা গেছে যে কোনো বসতি বা জনবৃত্ত গড়ে ওঠে কোনো একটা ধার্মিক প্রতিষ্ঠানকে ঘিরে। তাই ক্রমে গড়ে উঠলো কলকাতার প্রথম ইহুদী উপাসনা গৃহ বা সাইনাগোগ। তৈরি করলেন তৎকালীন ইহুদী সমাজের একজন বিশেষ মানুষ, ইজাকিল জুদাহ, ক্যানিং স্ট্রিটে। সেই সাইনাগোগ এখনও আছে কলকাতার বুকে।

খুবই কম দিনে ইহুদী রঙের সাথে মিশতে শুরু করল বাঙালি রক্ত। ইহুদী বাড়িতে হানুখার পাশাপাশি বাজতে শুরু করল সন্ধ্যাবেলার শঙ্খ।

দ্বিতীয় বিশ্ব যুদ্ধের পর অনেক ইহুদী পারি দিলেন অস্ট্রেলিয়া, মার্কিন দেশে। কিন্তু থেকে গেলেন কিছু পরিবার, যাদের কাছে ঘরবাড়ি মানে কোলকাতাই। তেমনই এক থেকে যাওয়া মানুষ ছিলেন ইজরায়েল নাহুম। বালক বয়সে বাবার হাত ধরে বাগদাদ থেকে এসেছিলেন কলকাতায়। বাবা ডেভিড নাহুম পেশায় ছিলেন baker। বালক ইজরায়েলের সখ ছিল কেক পেস্ট্রি বানানো। ১৯০১ সালে নাহুম সাহেব হগ মার্কেটে শুরু করলেন একটা ছোট্ট কেক রুটির দোকান। ক্রমে ব্যবসা বাড়লো, যুক্ত হলো গোটা নাহুম পরিবার। সেই ১৯০১ সাল থেকে মিষ্টি শহর কলকাতার sweet tooth এর দেখভাল করে আসছে এই ইহুদী পরিবার। এমন খুব কম কলকাতাবাসী আছেন যিনি অন্তত একবার এই শতবছরের আদর মাখা কেক পেস্ট্রির স্বর্গ রাজ্যে পদার্পণ করেননি। একজনের মালিক আইজ্যাক নাহুম সাহেবের দাদু চিকেন এই বেকারির প্রতিষ্ঠাতা। অশীতিপর হাসিখুশি আইজ্যাক সাহেবকে এখনও পাওয়া যায় কালো মেহগনি কাঠের ক্যাশ বাক্সের সামনে। শীতের সময় নাহুমের ব্যস্ততম সময়। নিঃশ্বাস ফেলার সময় থাকেনা আইজ্যাক সাহেব এবং কর্মচারিদের। অন্য সময়ে দুপুরের দিকে গেলে আইজ্যাক সাহেবের গল্পের ঝুলি খুলে যায়। জলজ্যান্ত ইতিহাস তিনি। হালের cakes বা cookie jar এর জন্মের অনেক অনেক আগে থেকে বাঙালির মিষ্টি রক্তকে আরও মিষ্টি করে আসছে এই প্রবাদপ্রতিম বেকারি। ছোটোবেলা মায়ের সাথে বড়দিনের আগে লাইন দিয়ে ফ্রুট কেক, রাম বল, লেমন টার্ট নিয়ে আসতাম। এটা ঠিকই যে আগের মত স্বাদ নেই আর কিছুরই, দামও বেশ চড়া। কিন্তু কলকাতা স্মৃতির শহর। কথায় বলে বিল্পব আর পুরনো প্রেমের নাকি কোনও হিসাব রাখতে নেই। তাই যতদিন কলকাতা থাকবে, ততদিন শীতের সন্ধ্যার নিউ মার্কেট নাহুমের ফ্রুট কেকের মিষ্টি গন্ধে মম করবে। আর নাহুমের কেক খেয়ে একটা বছরকে বিদায় জানিয়ে আরেকটা বছরকে আলিঙ্গন করে ডেকে নেবো।।

I went there with a lot of expectations, especially after the blazing reviews the place has received online. We searched the place foe quite some time, since Google map doesn't show the exact location of the place. The shop is located inside a street in the famed Hogg market. It gives ancient vibes with an unremarkable inside. There is hardly any ambience. The place however was brimming with customers who ordered a variety of cakes and snacks. When we reached at 4 o clock, they had run out of vegetable patties. We were very excited to try out everything, and ended up ordering brownie ( which was ok, rating 3/5), badam pastry (2/5), jam tart (2.5/5), chocolate pastry (3/5) and strawberry pastry (1.5/5). Most of the confectionery like jam tart, badam pastry was too sweet. Strawberry pastry tasted more like bubblegum than strawberries. There is no place to sit and eat. Many customers come for take out. Few were standind outside the shop and eating. I also felt that considering the quality of the products, they are overpriced. I can only say on an end note that I have tasted...
