The Foodies by night group always love to explore different cuisines. We pay for our own meals :)
About 10 days back just before Ganpati week started we homed into a appetizing joint at Bandra ( We limit ourselves upto Bandra given the commute time and the 10 PM deadline) Cafe Mommy Joon is located just behind the large linking road market garden
There is valet parking here and Shankar managed to park his new MG Hector which had a massive panoramic sun roof. (or moon/Star roof at night) since we had pre booked we got a table of our choice which was inside. The ambiance us totally Persian and this cafe is a heaven for non veggies. We were offered the Raan biryani but declined as it would be to much and we wouldn't get to enjoy the other dishes.
We proceeded to order the starters and main course. We got a nice crispy snack with some yummy dips and we four polished it off as we were ravenously hungry .
One important thing , Place the complete order before hand as it takes time to prepare some items . and most important please keep space for dessert .
First order up was the Lamb Barbari which was like a chicken pocket. This is a must order and a signature dish and is good for 4 people to share , In fact we liked it so much that we ordered the Chicken pocket . Then was another must order dish which was the Persian platter which had both lamb and chicken kebabs , the veggies also very succulent. This dish is good for 4 people who are sharing.
We also ordered lemonade without ice and mojito mint which was also well made and had a good zing to it.
proceeding to the main course we ordered 1 Addas Polow which was rice cooked with lentils and meatballs with a good sprinkling of raisins. The next dish was Lamb Ghormeh with saffron rice with kidney beans and lamb which was bursting with flavors .
Which brings us to the highlight which was baklava with homemade ice cream . This was so sinful that i could have eaten the complete plate all by myself.
They also have a take away menu which was Phirni for the missus , Mommy Joons baked pudding for the kids and Baklava for myself.
A must recommend place to visit and the total cost came to about 4000 for...
Read moreAfter living in the Middle East for 30 years and moving back to Mumbai in 2021, people often ask me what I miss most. My answer is simple: the food. The Middle Eastern cuisine, with its humble barbecue kebabs served with bread or rice, has always been close to my heart. The cuisine’s rich, aromatic flavors come from spices like cumin, coriander, cinnamon, turmeric, sumac, cardamom, paprika, and saffron. When these spices marinate succulent meats cooked over open flames or in earthen pots, they create a complexity that’s hard to match.
So, when we visited Cafe Mommyjoon, we were hoping for a nostalgic experience. Unfortunately, like many other places, it left us disappointed. The problem with restaurants promoting non-Indian cuisines is that they often have to modify their recipes to suit the Indian palate, and the authenticity suffers in the process.
Our order consisted of:
• Dough: A fizzy yogurt drink, which was quite underwhelming. • Kabob Koobideh: Barbecued ground lamb kabobs with saffron rice that lacked the signature depth of Middle Eastern flavors. • Shishlik: Barbecued lamb chops that were decent but didn’t meet expectations. • Lamb Stuffed Barbari: A puff pastry stuffed with lamb, which failed to impress. • Baklava: The traditional flaky dessert, again lacking the authenticity we were hoping for. • The tea was disappointingly straight from a tea bag.
I would rate Cafe Mommyjoon 2.3 out of 5:
Ambiance: 3 – The setting was pleasant, though nothing exceptional. Food: 2 – The dishes were underwhelming and didn’t capture the essence of true Middle Eastern cuisine. Service: 2 – The service could have been more attentive and engaged.
In conclusion, Cafe Mommyjoon may appeal to those unfamiliar with authentic Middle Eastern flavors, but for those of us seeking the real deal,...
