Potoba is primarily a restaurant which specializes in Maharashtrian fare but also serves Punjabi & Chinese cuisine as well. It is located on L J Road towards Mahim Church. It was earlier located across the road from its present location and had a smaller dining area. The present place has a bigger dining area and the variety in the menu has also increased.
I have visted here a couple of times and have had the following dishes from their kitchen. They have a variety of dishes which are found only in Maharashtrian kitchens like Metkut Bhath, Podnichi Poli, Poli Shikran, Masale Bhath etc
BHAKRI with VANGYACHI BHAJI [INR 130] This is a staple dish which is found in most Maharashtrian cuisine serving restaurants. Brinjal or Aubergine is cooked in gravy infused with coconut shavings, crushed peanuts, flavoured with jaggery and some dry spices. But the Brinjal which was served to me looked like it was boiled and kept separately and the gravy was prepared and poured over it. The Brinjal had not absorbed the flavor of the gravy. It was served with a typical Maharashtrian Jowar roti.
DAHI WADA [INR 70] Fried Wada made from Urad dal were immersed in warm water and then served by pouring thick, sweetened dahi over it. It was garnished with red chili powder & black pepper powder.
MISAL PAV [INR 95] Misal Pav is one of the favourite snack of Maharashtra. The Misal served here is very wholesome with a base of sprouted lentils, farsan, chopped onions & tomatoes and thick gravy based on coconut shavings and some spices. The Misal was correctly spiced and served with a bowl of extra gravy and a 2 pieces of Pav. RECOMMENDED
ALU WADI [INR 70] Colacasia leaves coated with a mixture of besan & mixture of dry spices. The leaves are then rolled, tied with a string, steamed and cut into roundels. The Alu Wadi can be served either steamed or can be further deep fried. Alu Wadi served here was yummy, served garnished with Sev and a side of chutney. RECOMMENDED
SOL KADHI [INR 60] Sol Kadhi was slightly lopsided towards a sour beverage. It ought to be fine balance between a creamy flavor of the coconut milk, tartness of the Kokum and the pungency of the garlic & chilies.
Potoba does serve a variety of other cuisines including Italian but I have not tired them out yet to comment on it.
The service is good & efficient but the prices seem to be on the...
Read moreHello viewer, thank you for passing by to read the review. We decided to try out some authentic Maharashtrian cuisine and Trupt Potoba Veg Restaurant at Dadar definitely scored on all fronts. We intended to have their Maharashtrian thali but when tried their various starters, snacks and cool drinks, we were fully stuffed. We would definitely recommend that you visit with your family (we are surely going to visit again) for the authentic Maharashtrian taste, very good food quality, and hospitality of the staff. Cost wise the rates seem expensive but for the quality and quantity it is good. Quick ratings: Food quality (freshness and ingredients): 5/5 Food taste and authenticity: 5/5 Ambience: 4.5/5 Staff behaviour: 5/5 Service: 4.5/5 Value for money: 4.5/5
For the foodie in you who wishes to know more.... let's dive into individual item reviews that we had. Sabudana vada: 5/5, taste was good. Outer surface slightly crisp and inner was properly cooked. Was served with sweet curd and coconut chutney. Worth a second serving. Bhajaniche Vade combined with Kala Vatana Usual: 5/5, freshly done, balanced taste and vade were soft like puris (not the hard ones). Also they were not oily. Definitely a recommendation. Misal Pav: 4/5, the dish came with kala vatana usal, farsan, onion & lemon, 2 pav, extra kat, buttermilk small portion. The misal was medium spicy and palatable for the normal eaters. What we felt a bit down was the kat, which should be very spicy, but it was normal and same as the vatana usal. So there is scope for improvement on this small part. Mix Marathi snacks (snacks platter): 5/5, very good. Contained two pieces each of batata vada, alu vadi, kothimbir vadi and samosa. Definitely recommend giving a second round. Solkadhi: 5/5, good taste including that of...
