The legendary Masaharu Morimoto, launched Wasabi, the first restaurant in India to offer contemporary Japanese cuisine in August 2004. It stands amongst the 5 most expensive restaurants in Mumbai. Climb the dramatic red lacquer staircase and sit in dimly lit interiors to enjoy the products of the freshest seafood in the city, flown in from various places around the world. A refreshing vegetarian selection cohabits with sushi, sashimi, Kinoko mushroom curry, marinated black cod with miso, white fish or salmon carpaccio, and shrimp tempura in bittersweet sauce and wasabi mayo.
Featuring a wine list as tempting as the menu, Wasabi by Morimoto guarantees a relaxing Oriental evening Serving up the most delicious Japanese fare in the city, Wasabi by Morimoto is frequented by celebrities and connoisseurs of sushi alike. The exquisite food and ambience earned this spot a place in Asia’s 50 best restaurants in 2018. Dinner here can cost up to INR 12,000 approximately for two people. I was extremely sceptical when this restaurant was recommended as on par or better than other Japanese restaurants around the world like Zuma or Nobu. When you arrive at the Taj Hotel and finally clear security, you have the feeling you have entered a royal palace. Note the M F Hussein triptic painting hanging behind reception (a masterpiece). As you make your way to Wasabi, you can induldge in the Royal atmosphere of the hotel. Before you get to the restaurant, you cross the Taj Hotel Bar, a quaint yet buzzing room with individuals from all around the world. As you cross the bar, there is a spiral staircase with a glass lift that takes you to the Wasabi dining area. At first impression, there is a sushi bar, a teppanyaki post and a few tables dotted around. Nothing spectacular. Once you are greeted and shown to your table the experience begins. The waiters are extremely pleasant and polite and are fully attentive. The food is fresh and exquisite. Every bite is full of flavour and to my surprise was just as good if not better as the aforementioned restaurants. Presentation is on point for every dish and they create new Japanese inspired dishes. We had the change to try. A pork belly dish which is pictured. The meat melted in our mouths, spectacular. Interestingly, they serve a BBQ tuna, which you cook at the table on a black stone, also pictured. All dishes available were to the same standard as would be expected of Zuma or Nobu. The real trila came with the mains. The Black Miso Cod. Although full of flavour this was slightly overcooked leaving a burnt layer around the cod. It was extremely tasty and would have been just as good as any other five star dining restaurant around the world had it not been over cooked. The dessert selection is limited, but what's on offer is scrumptious. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

After reading many good reviews and recommendations, we came to Wasabi with very high expectations, but the whole dinning experience was very disappointing, I suggest if you are Asian or foodie who has been to other countries and tried Japanese food, don't waste your money here. We ordered 2 non-veg omasake, 2 soft beverages, 1 appetizer and 1 sushi, combination of omasake was a tragedy— heavy appetizers, everything was dipped in strong sauce, mayonnaise and Jalapeños on top, after thick starters they served light flavor nigiri sushi— your palate are already tired at this time, the mushroom rice and dessert are ok, but can't smooth our bad feeling, it’s the fusion Japanese cuisine that caters to foreigner taste, the whole dinner cost around INR 25,000, you will definitely have better options in Mumbai, especially Mumbai has bunch of fresh seafood can choose. Maybe because Wasabi is located in Taj Palace thus it’s so overpriced, but even more disappointed to have food of this quality under this shiny brand. And one more thing to note, you can’t even see gate way of India in the night, there’s only dark outside, they don't maintain the sights like others around the world.

Restaurant Review: Wasabi by Morimoto

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars)

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Wasabi by Morimoto, a charming Japanese restaurant located in the heart of the city. As a fan of Japanese cuisine, I was excited to explore their menu, and overall, my experience was delightful.

Ambiance: The restaurant exudes a warm and welcoming ambiance, with traditional Japanese decor and soft lighting that creates a cozy atmosphere. The wooden furnishings and intimate seating arrangements contributed to a relaxed dining experience. The background music was soothing and not too loud, allowing for easy conversation.

Service: The staff at Wasabi by Morimoto were attentive and courteous throughout my visit. The waitstaff was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations, considering my dietary preferences. However, during peak hours, the service could be slightly slow, but it didn't significantly impact the overall experience.

Food: The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the food. Wasabi by Morimoto offers an extensive selection of Japanese dishes, from sushi and sashimi to various grilled items and tempura. I started with the assorted sushi platter, which was fresh and expertly prepared, showcasing the chef's skills.

The menu also features a range of hot dishes, and I particularly enjoyed the sushi and miso soup which were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The miso soup was a comforting addition, and the portion sizes were just right, leaving me satisfied but not overly full.

Drinks: The restaurant offers an impressive array of traditional sake and other Japanese beverages. I tried a few varieties of sake, and each one was well-paired with the food I ordered. They also have a small but well-curated selection of Japanese beers and non-alcoholic options.

Price: While the quality of the food and service was top-notch, it's worth noting that Wasabi by Morimoto falls on the higher end of the price spectrum. However, given the overall experience and the authentic taste, it's well worth the occasional splurge.

Overall, Wasabi by Morimoto is a gem for Japanese cuisine enthusiasts. The restaurant offers an excellent dining experience with its inviting ambiance, attentive service, and delectable dishes. Whether you're seeking a romantic dinner spot or a place to catch up with friends over great food and drinks, Wasabi by Morimmoto won't disappoint. Just be sure to make a reservation, especially during peak hours, to secure your spot in this delightful...
