Some reviewers mention Murni's is a place for tourists but that's not really true. I got back to Bali as soon as I could in 2022 when the quarantine restrictions were still onerous and the place had only domestic customers. The first time I went here was in 1992 when Monkey Forest Road was still dirt and the food was very good then if a little more expensive than others at the time. Since then I've been back many times over the years and everything has been rock solid every time. Maybe once the beef rendang was a bit tough but the flavours were still great. In that time I've seen many restaurants come and go but Murni's has kept ticking along like a metronome whilst prices have gone up by more elsewhere to the point it's an inexpensive option now but still putting out it's varied menu to the same great standard. When I returned to Bali again in July 2022 with my wife, the same waitress who'd seen me months earlier thanked me for coming back. Entirely my pleasure. Of course it's run by the attractive entrepreneurial Murni who is one of the original trailblazers in hospitality and business in Ubud that set the example for others to follow. Of course there's only ever one original. It's hard to go wrong with the nasi campur here or anything duck related. The stalwarts like satay and nasi goreng hit the spot and the bakso is pretty good too. The drinks are also always well chilled and the view, even if downstairs is still not open, is a relaxing wall of greenery as the river...
Read moreIf I can give 7 stars, this is it. If I can only pick 1 restaurant in Ubud, this is it. Amazing food and good service, the menu shows how serious this owner cares about their food and customers. It details everything you need to know about the dish, in both Indonesian and plain English. The menu includes classic Balinese and popular Westerns considering this is a tourist town with lots of Caucasians. The most impressive order was the pork belly, while the skin is still crispy and crunchy, the rest simply melts in your mouth, such a succulent meal! Warning that this might shock some people who cannot take fat, unlike usual 5:5 pork belly, it's 1:9 lean meat and fat, this ain't for fainted hearts. The serving portion is just perfect as each piece is generous in size, to have more than 4 or 5pcs might sicken/upsetting your tummy. Sate lilit, Murni fish & Bakso ayam are also very delicious and I won't hesitate to recommend these to anyone. I've been eating food from the street stalls, morning local market food and other restaurants, though admitting that street stalls still surprise me each time, I still think this is a fairly priced restaurant for the sake of their food quality, it definitely puts some "popular" restaurants sit in the Ubud central area to shame. A...
Read moreThis restaurant has been around for many, many years for a good reason, it has some pretty good food and service at a reasonable price. The chicken sate was excellent as was the guacamole for the appetisers. The sate are served on the little clay charcoal holders and the (peanut) sauce is sensational.
My partner tried the bebek betutu for her main course and thought that it was very good but the duck was a bit on the small side. I had the pork ribs (Iga bakar) served with chips instead of rice. The flavour of the ribs and the sauce was delicious, however, some of the ribs were still cold as though they'd just been pulled out of the freezer and incorrectly reheated. This was really unfortunate. It wasn't worth sending back as it still tasted good, it was just disappointing.
The service at Murni's is excellent, the staff are very helpful and friendly. The atmosphere initially was as good as it was when I first came here in 2005, you can hear the river flowing below.....and then the doof doof started up nearby which ruins the tranquillity. Whatever happened to people going to Ubud for a peaceful experience of art, culture and cuisine?
Murni's is still a wonderful reflection of Ubud and its previous...
