Finally! Someone who gives a damn about making a sandwich. For far too long the Irish have been plagued with store bought, pre-packaged, mayo sodden pieces of bread jammed with water-pumped meat. Even when we think we're getting a good sandwich, it's just a reworked chicken fillet roll or club sandwich. We may give out about Americans and their larger than life portions for many reasons, but we have to accept that their cultural melting pot has given birth to at least a handful of admirable qualities, especially when it comes to comfort food.
Doughboys is just off Camden Street, opposite the Bleeding Horse, and offers that product you never knew your hangover wanted. Even without the Fear and crippling dehydration, their sandwiches are something to be marvelled at. Far from the over-priced street food that people have convinced themselves to pay for, Doughboys offers something fantastically sincere in its pricing and presentation. Ranging €7 - €9 per sandwich, there are a range of delectable carb stuffed rolls. From the Meatball to the Club. What's more, they experiment with different ideas, which is more than anyone can say for the standard safe bets that most lunch spots around the city go for. They tackled Action Bronson's sandwich with the Easy Ride during the summer: grilled peppers, onion and jalepenos with liquidised cheese and brisket. They had an Italian porchetta sandwich on Thursdays and Fridays but it had to be 86'd from the menu 'cause we Irish don't like anything weird... At least they're trying something new.
And that's the point. We like new things when they're safe. "Have you had the nachos at 777? They're divine!" No they're not, they're goddamn nachos. They might be a cut above the cinema, but try Eddie Rockets Super Nachos with chili beef and you'll have the same ass blasting results form a similar flavour. Have you had porchetta? Have you tried mix grilled vegetables with brisket and a chipotle mayo? How about meatballs in your sub that are actually a beef and pork mix like they should be? Is it worth paying money for some form of light ingenuity and menu experimentation? Of course it is.
At only a couple of euro more than you're average Subway footlong, Doughboys is well worth the trip and the price. They're friendly, accommodating and they run out of ingredients on a near daily basis because they are actually preparing and cooking these menu items. It's not pre packaged and shipped in. It's cooked.
New York Deli sandwich culture is a part of America I want here. I will trade trendy burgers and all burrito joints in Dublin 2 for a few more Doughboy...
Read moreI previously ordered the Veggie Italian Sub. Very tasty but I would request for extra cheese next time- I would definitely recommend. I tried to stop into the shop for a late lunch yesterday. The hours online lists open from 8am until 3:30pm. I went in just before 3pm, the door was still open and a few people were sitting at the tables but the staff informed me that the shop was closed. I was hoping to grab and go with my son and cousin, my cousin's visiting Dublin for the first time. Not the best impression being turned away and pretty disappointing but wouldn't deter me from going again. Just be sure to go an hour or so before...
Read moreDoughboys really does deliver some of the best sandwiches in Dublin. I recently got their Club Dough and it was great. While a lot of the sandwich shops can over pack their sandwiches, Doughboys got theirs just right, with flavours that complement each other rather than overwhelm.
If you really want to treat yourself in the morning then you should totally get one of their Ultimate Breakfast Sandwiches. With a brioche bun and their signature chipotle mayo it really will knock your local garage brekkie roll out of the water.
All in all it's a great place for breakfast or lunch. I just wish it was open for longer...
