Soul Kitchen Restaurant in Matera: A Pleasant Surprise!

Upon seeing the English name, our initial impressions were skepticism about how “authentic” this Italian restaurant could be. However, Soul Kitchen has completely astounded me and my friends with its impeccable quality! The originality the chef infuses into traditional Italian ingredients is commendable.

The service is impeccable, with its excellence reflecting in the minor details - from the frozen glasses accompanying the Prosecco during appetizers to the attentive waiter ensuring nothing was amiss and providing tailored recommendations. The open kitchen setup is a testament to the freshness of their ingredients, watching the vegetables being cooked right before our eyes was a treat.

One word of advice: Let go of your inhibitions and let yourself be surprised! Initially, I gravitated towards familiar dishes, but our charismatic waiter, with his genuine Italian charm, encouraged us to venture out of our comfort zone. The result? A delectable pannacota topped with a unique blend of mild local chili and olive oil - a true testament to the restaurant’s innovative spirit.

We had high hopes for this restaurant as it was recommended by some locals we met.

Having travelled for the last 6 months this restaurant ties for first place with our most uninspiring / tasteless meals.

Entrees The Cavatelli entree tasted like glue. There was absolutely no flavour to it but left a bitter aftertaste in your mouth. The potato ravioli just tasted like cheesy pasta with tomato sauce. Fine, edible, but no better than making it yourself.

Mains Beef Tagliata was over cooked and heavily reliant on poor quality fatty cut and olive oil for flavour. The black pork special was the worst dish we have tasted since being away. Minority (dry) pork, majority stuffing, and some weird thick sticky gravy to drown it out.

Sides Potatoes - thank goodness, these were good. Just needed a pinch of salt Plate of vegetables - no effort at cooking or plating.

We watched a number of tables struggle for service. You are in an area where you have so much tourist exposure, why wouldn’t you make the effort to create a perfect setting and meal.

Whilst our waitress couldn’t have been more kind she could not make up for the poor food and experience.

Abbiamo prenotato per questo ristorante in occasione della nostra vacanza lì a Matera, eravamo 3 amici. Ne siamo venuti a conoscenza proprio attraverso le ottime recensioni su TripAdvisor e per questo motivo, per passare la nostra ultima serata lì, avevamo scelto questo locale. La nostra prenotazione era fissata per le ore 21.00, ma una volta arrivati (puntuali) ci dicono di accomodarci tra i tavoli fuori. Il problema non sorgeva dal momento in cui volevamo usufruire dell'ambiente interno, siccome così suggestivo e caratteristico. Ma alla nostra richiesta di avere un posto all'interno, ci hanno fatto accomodare giù (vicino ad una cantina) e perlopiù unico tavolo occupato in quella saletta. Ma se vogliamo sorvolare anche su questo, va bene, se non fosse però che siccome eravamo l'unico tavolo lì presente, siamo stati quasi del tutto abbandonati dal personale (che per portare anche solo il menù ci fa aspettare 30min). Si scusa così per il ritardo portandoci la prima portata velocemente. Alla seconda, però, si ritorna a fare un ritardo inammissibile (45 Min circa) , tant'è che il sapore del primo mangiato precedentemente era stato anche dimenticato. A questo punto, chiediamo il conto e ci alziamo, facendo presente al responsabile quanto accaduto. Ciò che ci ha risposto lascia senz'altro però l'amaro in bocca, perché si giustifica dicendo che i loro secondi (in questo caso la carne che avevamo ordinato) dovevano avere il loro giusto tempo per cuocere siccome non erano piatti "preriscaldati" come fanno invece gli altri ristoranti. Conosciamo chi lavora nella ristorazione ma soprattutto ne abbiamo girati tanti, tantissimi di ristoranti e non abbiamo mai aspettato così tanto per una cottura di un saltimbocca e un filetto o qualsiasi altro tipo di carne. Poteva semplicemente scusarsi, avrebbe fatto sicuramente una più degna figura. In tutto ciò, ad uno dei nostri amici presenti a questa pessima esperienza così recensita anche su TripAdvisor, il responsabile non ci ha pensato due volte a cercare nome e cognome su Facebook ribadendo la sua posizione e contraddicendo quanto detto invece di veritiero da noi. Insomma, un'ultima serata lì a Matera passata con un senso di amarezza lasciata purtroppo da questo ristorante.
